Chapter 11
Victoria asked to speak to Rocco without Marcus.
He agreed only with attorneys present.
She entered wearing the same engagement ring Rocco had given her.
Then she removed it and placed it on the table.
“I’m not asking you to take me back.”
“Good.”
She flinched.
Rocco remained still.
“Tell me why.”
Victoria stared at her hands.
“At first, I believed the trust plan was legitimate.”
“When did you stop believing that?”
“When Marcus started talking about Noah’s medical records.”
“And you stayed.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
She looked at him.
“Because I was scared.”
Rocco waited.
Victoria had grown up with a father who disappeared when she was twelve and a mother who moved from apartment to apartment until Victoria finished high school.
Security mattered to her almost irrationally.
Rocco’s prenuptial agreement terrified her.
Not because it left her poor.
Because it made clear that if the marriage ended, Noah and the Caruso family would remain a permanent world from which she could be removed.
Marcus recognized that fear.
He told her adoption would make her real family.
He told her the trust would guarantee she could never be pushed out.
He told her Rocco would never agree if they presented it as financial control.
So they would present it as protecting Noah.
“I told myself I was making sure I wouldn’t lose him,” Victoria said.
Rocco’s eyes hardened.
“So you hurt him.”
She began crying.
“Yes.”
“When you pulled the hearing aid out?”
“I panicked when I realized he had heard us arguing.”
“And after you crushed it?”
“I wanted him to stop talking.”
Rocco said nothing.
Victoria covered her face.
“I know what that sounds like.”
“No.”
Rocco’s voice was quiet.
“You know what it is.”
She looked up.
There was no excuse left.

It did not excuse what she chose after she understood the plan.
