Chapter 9

The forensic review found no giant missing fortune.

That surprised Rocco.

Marcus had moved money improperly, but not enough to explain the entire scheme.

The important discovery came from legal invoices.

Marcus had paid an estate-planning consultant through one of his construction companies.

The consultant had drafted a proposed restatement of Rocco’s trust.

Rocco had never seen the complete version.

Evelyn read it first.

Then she called him.

“You need to come here.”

The document was ninety-two pages.

Most of it looked ordinary.

The dangerous section was buried inside provisions supposedly designed to protect Noah.

If Rocco signed the restatement after marrying Victoria, the structure would allow a future adoptive parent to participate in decisions regarding Noah’s care.

Still not shocking.

Then came the next provision.

A designated family trust protector could replace the independent trustee if Noah was determined to require “enhanced lifelong management due to developmental or functional limitations.”

The proposed trust protector was not named in the unsigned draft.

But metadata from the consultant’s working file contained a placeholder:

M.C.

Marcus Caruso.

Rocco stared at it.

“And the adoptive parent?”

Evelyn turned the page.

Initials:

V.H.

Victoria Hayes.

Together, they could have obtained enormous influence over decisions involving Noah’s assets.

But only if another condition was satisfied.

Noah needed to be characterized as someone likely to require lifelong management.

Rocco suddenly understood the medical requests.

The developmental records.

The questions about his hearing.

The attempt to learn whether he would always need help.

Yet one thing still did not fit.

No competent physician would describe a three-year-old as permanently incapable simply because he wore hearing aids.

Evelyn agreed.

“So what were they expecting?”

Rocco looked at the trust language again.

“They weren’t expecting a doctor to say it naturally.”

Silence.

That was the edge of the truth.

The final answer came from the consultant’s emails.

But what those emails revealed was worse than Rocco had expected.
