Chapter 5
The third clue arrived through paperwork Rocco had nearly signed.
His family office kept a queue of documents requiring his approval.
Insurance renewals.
Property authorizations.
Corporate resolutions.
Charitable transfers.
Buried among them was a document titled:
Family Continuity and Child Protection Planning Memorandum.
Rocco had seen the cover before.
Marcus had given it to him during a meeting and described it as routine estate cleanup before the wedding.
Rocco never read past page three.
Evelyn did.
The document was not legally operative by itself.
But it recommended several future changes.
One recommendation would replace the independent trust company with a “family-centered fiduciary structure.”
Another proposed giving Noah’s future legal parent greater authority over trust distributions for medical and educational needs.
A third recommended appointing a “family protector” with power to remove and replace trustees under specified conditions.
The draft left the names blank.
Rocco stared at it.
“Who prepared this?”
“A consulting firm Marcus uses.”
“Did I request it?”
“No.”
“Did you?”
“No.”
Rocco looked at the date.
Five weeks earlier.
One week before Victoria opened the adoption consultation.
Two weeks before she asked Maria where Noah’s spare hearing aid was kept.
The sequence mattered.
Trust proposal.
Adoption inquiry.
Interest in hearing equipment.
Then the reception.
Rocco asked Evelyn, “What does a trust protector do?”
“Depends on the document. Potentially a great deal.”
“Could Marcus appoint himself?”
“Not without you signing a restatement.”
“What about Victoria?”
“If she adopted Noah and you drafted the trust that way, she could have influence over distributions.”
Rocco’s jaw tightened.
“Could they control it together?”
Evelyn chose her words carefully.
“If you willingly signed documents giving them that authority, yes.”
That was the point.
Nobody could simply steal control of Noah’s trust.
Rocco had to give it to them.
Which made Noah’s fragment more important.
Daddy signs.
That evening Rocco called his head of security.
“I want every visitor log between Marcus and Victoria for the last two months.”
The result came before midnight.
They had met at the estate eleven times when Rocco was away.
