Chapter 1 - THE MAN THEY BOTH LOOKED AT

Vincent followed their eyes.
Caleb Mercer sat twelve feet away with one hand resting beside his wineglass.
For thirty years, Caleb had been more than the Bellacorte family attorney. He had written contracts when Vincent’s father was alive, negotiated property purchases, handled estates, settled disputes, and somehow remained calm in rooms where everyone else carried guns.
Tonight, he looked almost bored.
That bothered Vincent immediately.
“Caleb.”
Caleb folded his napkin.
“Vincent.”
“Stand up.”
A few guests looked down.
Caleb remained seated.
“You’re angry. We should discuss this tomorrow.”
Vincent glanced toward Eli.
The boy was gripping Maria’s apron with both fists.
“No. We discuss it now.”
Helena stepped forward.
“This has nothing to do with Caleb.”
Vincent looked at her.
“Then why did you look at him?”
She had no answer.
Adrian did.
“Because he knows what Maria has been doing.”
Maria stared at him. “What have I been doing?”
“Getting into things that don’t concern you.”
There it was.
Not child abuse.
Not frightening Eli.
Something else.
Vincent turned toward Maria.
“What did you see?”
Caleb stood suddenly.
“Before an employee starts making accusations against members of your family, you should remember that she has had unusually unrestricted access to your son.”
Maria went pale.
Vincent did not.
He had spent his life listening to men change the subject when the original subject frightened them.
“You’re talking about Maria,” Vincent said. “I asked what she saw.”
Caleb picked up the black leather briefcase beside his chair.
Vincent noticed Adrian watching it.
“Put the case down.”
Caleb smiled faintly.
“Attorney-client documents.”
“Then you shouldn’t have brought them to dinner.”
“Vincent.”
“Put it down.”
Caleb obeyed.
Vincent looked toward Maria again.
She swallowed.
“Yesterday, I found Mr. Mercer inside Eli’s nursery.”
Caleb’s smile disappeared.
Vincent’s voice became quieter.
“Doing what?”
“Going through Eli’s desk.”
“He’s three,” Adrian snapped. “He doesn’t have a desk.”
“He has the little writing table his mother bought him.”
That ended Adrian’s objection.
Maria continued.
“Mr. Mercer had a cream-colored folder with Eli’s full name on it. When he saw me, he closed it and told me he was updating household insurance records.”
Vincent looked at Caleb.
“You update insurance records in my son’s nursery?”
“It involved household risk.”
Helena interrupted.
“That’s exactly why Maria needed to be removed.”
“Removed?”
Maria looked at her.
“You told me tonight was about something Eli supposedly said.”
Helena realized the mistake.
Vincent heard it too.
Not disciplined.
Not questioned.
Removed.
He looked around the table.
The dinner had not been an argument that got out of control.
Adrian and Helena had already expected Maria to be gone by the end of it.
Eli’s accusation was supposed to be the reason.
Vincent put one hand on Caleb’s briefcase.
“What’s inside?”
Caleb’s expression hardened.
“Don’t.”
Vincent opened it.
The top folder was empty.
Underneath were copies of Eli’s birth certificate, his preschool enrollment records, and the first page of a legal document.
Vincent read the heading.
IN THE INTEREST OF ELI BELLACORTE, A MINOR CHILD.
He slowly looked up.
Caleb said nothing.
Vincent closed the briefcase.
Then he ordered every phone in the dining room collected.

Whatever they had started with Eli was bigger than Maria.
And nobody was leaving until he understood how much bigger.
