Chapter 11 - HELENA FINALLY ADMITTED WHAT SHE WANTED

Helena agreed to meet Vincent only after Nora informed her that the petition had been recovered.
She entered the study without jewelry.
Vincent noticed because Helena had worn rings and pearls even to funerals.
Today she looked like his aunt rather than a Bellacorte matriarch.
“Was it your idea?” he asked.
“No.”
“Caleb’s?”
“He showed me the option.”
“And you signed.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Helena looked toward Laura’s photograph on the shelf.
“Because you were changing everything.”
Vincent waited.
“You started moving legitimate companies away from family control. You reduced cash businesses. You stopped letting capos use company property. You talked about selling the estate.”
“All legal decisions.”
“To you.”
Her voice sharpened.
“To everyone else, you were dismantling the structure that protected us.”
“Protected you.”
“Protected all of us.”
Vincent leaned back.
“And Eli?”
Helena’s face weakened.
“I believed he needed stability.”
“So you made him lie.”
“I believed Maria had influenced him.”
“No.”
Vincent’s voice stayed calm.
“You needed to believe that.”
She looked away.
Caleb had convinced Helena that a temporary guardianship would last weeks.
She would stabilize the trust.
Adrian would reassure the capos.
Vincent would be forced to abandon his reforms.
Then they would return Eli.
“You were going to teach me a lesson with my son.”
Helena began crying.
“I was trying to stop you from destroying what generations built.”
Vincent looked at her.
“My son is not a family asset.”
“I know.”
“You knew before dinner too.”
That silenced her.
Motive explained her choices.
It did not excuse them.
Vincent told her she would have no unsupervised contact with Eli while the investigation continued.
Helena looked devastated.
“You can’t take my grandnephew from me.”
“You tried to take my son from me.”
The sentence ended the argument.
When Helena left, Adrian was waiting in the hallway.
His mother walked past him without speaking.
Adrian looked at Vincent.
“What happens now?”
May you like
Vincent answered honestly.
“Now everybody pays for their own part.”
