Chapter 12 - CALEB LOST THE THING HE TRUSTED MOST
Caleb had trusted documents more than people.
Documents were predictable.
People panicked.
Unfortunately for him, his own documents became the case.
Investigators recovered draft petitions, billing entries, emails with Helena, the copied school records, and corporate resolutions prepared to recognize her temporary authority.
Nothing showed Caleb intended physical harm.
It showed something more mundane and more believable.
He believed he could manipulate family court procedure faster than Vincent could understand what was happening.
He expected everyone to call it a family disagreement once control changed hands.
The forced accusation against Maria turned that strategy into potential witness manipulation and fraud.
Caleb’s law license was suspended while criminal and disciplinary investigations moved forward.
Helena’s affidavit exposed her participation.
Adrian voluntarily gave investigators his phone.
Messages confirmed Helena had told him the dinner needed “a clear statement from Eli in front of everyone.”
Adrian replied:
He’s three.
Helena answered:
Three is old enough to say he’s scared.
Adrian still went through with it.
He read those messages himself and did not ask anyone to defend him.
Maria returned to the estate once to complete her formal statement.
Eli saw her through the foyer and ran toward her.
She crouched and hugged him.
Vincent stayed back.
Afterward, Maria asked to speak privately.
“I’m not coming back to work here.”
Vincent nodded.
“I assumed.”
“I’ll stay involved until Eli has someone else he trusts.”
“You don’t owe us that.”
“No.”
She looked at him.
“I’m doing it because I care about him.”
That distinction mattered.
The Bellacortes had spent years turning affection into obligation.
Maria refused.
Vincent began searching for a professional caregiver and continued Eli’s therapy.
The guardian ad litem inspected the estate.
She criticized the armed environment, the blurred lines between family and business, and Vincent’s habit of allowing senior relatives unrestricted access to Eli.
Vincent did not argue.
He changed it.
Capos stopped meeting at the house.
Weapons were prohibited from family areas except for licensed security.
Business moved downtown.
Eli’s home slowly became a home instead of headquarters.
For the first time, Vincent understood that defeating Caleb’s petition was not enough.
