Chapter 10 - THE DINNER WAS EVIDENCE AGAINST VINCENT
The recovered petition came from Caleb’s former paralegal.
She turned it over after learning investigators were reviewing the withdrawn filing.
The major twist was finally visible in full.
Caleb had prepared the emergency guardianship petition before the family dinner ever began.
The plan required one final event.
A room full of witnesses needed to hear Eli say Maria frightened him.
Then Vincent needed to refuse to remove her.
That refusal would be described as proof that Vincent’s judgment was so compromised that Eli faced immediate danger inside his own home.
Maria had never been the true target.
She was manufactured evidence against Vincent.
The dinner was supposed to create the scene Caleb’s petition already described.
And the petition did far more than request Maria’s removal.
It asked the court to temporarily suspend Vincent’s authority over Eli while an emergency investigation occurred.
Under Schedule C of Laura’s trust, that suspension would activate Helena as successor family protector.
Helena would gain the voting authority attached to Eli’s trust interest.
Caleb had prepared corporate resolutions recognizing her temporary control.
Adrian, as the next family successor and senior capo, would effectively run the Bellacorte organization while Vincent fought to regain custody authority.
Everything fit.
Caleb’s strange requests for Eli’s records.
The repeated use of the word frightened.
The prewritten employee statements.
The questions about Vincent traveling without Eli.
The missing Schedule C.
Caleb asking Adrian whether the capos would accept him.
The promise that the family would have “stability” by morning.
None of it had been random.
They were constructing a legal coup around a three-year-old child.
Vincent read the petition without speaking.
Adrian sat across from him.
Helena refused to attend.
When Vincent reached the signature page, he stopped.
Helena had signed an affidavit two days before the dinner.
She knew.
Adrian had not signed anything.
He looked genuinely sick.
“You didn’t know the whole plan,” Vincent said.
“No.”
“You still helped create the lie.”
“Yes.”
“You still grabbed Eli.”
Adrian’s eyes dropped.
“Yes.”
There would be no easy absolution.
Then Nora pointed to another page.
Caleb’s proposed order included temporary restrictions on Vincent removing Eli from Illinois.
If the dinner had worked, Caleb intended to file before Vincent even understood what had happened.
The family would tell him the court was only protecting Eli.
Helena would control the trust.
Adrian would control the organization.
Maria would be gone.
And Eli’s forced lie would become the foundation beneath all of it.
Vincent closed the petition.
For years he had believed power meant preventing other people from moving against him.
