Chapter 2 - THE WORD THEY KEPT USING
Vincent moved Eli and Maria upstairs.
He did not send his son away because he distrusted Maria.
He sent him away because the child had already been used enough for one night.
Then Vincent called Nora Sinclair.
Nora was the only attorney outside the Bellacorte organization who handled Vincent’s personal family matters. She had no financial relationship with Adrian, Helena, or Caleb.
That independence suddenly mattered.
By midnight, she was sitting in Vincent’s study reading photocopies from Caleb’s briefcase.
“There’s no filed petition here,” she said.
Vincent stood by the window.
“But?”
“These records are the kind someone collects before filing one.”
“For custody?”
“Guardianship, emergency child protection, parental fitness. I can’t tell yet.”
Vincent’s jaw tightened.
Nora lifted another page.
“This language bothers me.”
“What language?”
She showed him a handwritten note found between Eli’s school records.
Child reports being frightened by household employee. Father refuses to remove employee despite warning.
Vincent stared at the word.
Frightened.
Helena had not told Eli to say Maria hit him.
She had not told him to say Maria screamed.
She had said:
Then say she frightened you.
Exact language.
Nora saw the recognition on his face.
“That phrase came up tonight?”
“Yes.”
“How exactly?”
Vincent told her.
Nora sat back.
“That’s not proof of a legal scheme.”
“I know.”
“But it’s not nothing.”
The next morning, Maria gave a written statement.
She described finding Caleb in the nursery.
She also remembered something she had initially dismissed.
Three weeks earlier, Caleb asked her how often Vincent traveled overnight without Eli.
Before that, Helena asked whether Maria ever slept in the nursery when Vincent was away.
Adrian once asked whether Eli cried when Vincent left the estate.
At the time, each question seemed ordinary.
Together, they did not.
Vincent checked Caleb’s estate access records.
Caleb had entered the property seven times in the previous two months while Vincent was away.
Three visits occurred when Eli was home.
None appeared on Vincent’s calendar.
When confronted, Caleb claimed Helena had requested private estate-planning consultations.
Helena confirmed it.
Adrian said he knew nothing about them.
For the first time, Vincent believed Adrian might be telling the truth about one piece.
But he still remembered Adrian’s fingers around Eli’s jaw.
Not knowing everything did not make him innocent.
That afternoon, one more fact arrived.
Eli’s preschool administrator called Nora after learning the family was reviewing access to the child’s records.
Someone from Caleb’s office had requested certified copies of Eli’s attendance history and emergency-contact forms six weeks earlier.
The request stated that it was needed for “anticipated family proceedings.”
There had been no family proceedings.
At least none Vincent knew about.
He looked at Nora.
“What happens if someone planned one without telling me?”
