Chapter 9 - THE PETITION THAT VANISHED

Caleb disappeared for thirty-six hours.
He did not flee the country.
He went somewhere smarter.
His own lawyer’s office.
Through counsel, he refused to answer Vincent and began negotiating how much material he could lawfully withhold.
Nora moved faster.
The withdrawn guardianship matter had left traces.
A courier remembered delivering a sealed packet to the courthouse at 7:40 the morning after the dinner.
Before the clerk processed it, someone from Caleb’s office called and ordered its return.
That call happened shortly after Vincent locked down the estate.
Caleb realized the plan had failed before the court could see it.
The courier still had a digital delivery record.
Attached was a cover sheet.
Nora showed Vincent.
It listed six proposed witnesses.
Helena Bellacorte.
Adrian Bellacorte.
James Porter.
Elaine Brooks.
Two family guests.
Every person expected to hear Eli accuse Maria.
Maria’s name appeared under:
Alleged dangerous household employee.
Vincent’s appeared under:
Parent knowingly permitting continued access.
He read the words slowly.
This was no longer about firing Maria.
But the actual petition was still missing.
Without it, Nora could not prove exactly what Caleb intended to ask the court to do.
Then the guardian ad litem interviewed Maria.
Maria brought one item nobody else knew existed.
Not a recording.
Not a secret camera.
A piece of paper.
Several weeks earlier, she had emptied the wastebasket in Caleb’s guest office after he met with Helena.
One torn page had fallen beside the basket rather than inside it.
Maria noticed Eli’s name and, worried, placed it in the lost-property drawer rather than throwing it away.
She retrieved it after leaving the estate.
The page contained numbered paragraphs.
Most were incomplete.
One survived:
The child has expressed fear of household employee Maria Reed, yet Vincent Bellacorte has knowingly refused to terminate contact, demonstrating impaired judgment regarding the minor’s immediate safety.
Vincent sat completely still.
There was that word again.
Fear.
Exactly the word Helena had tried to force from Eli.
Nora compared the numbering with the missing Schedule C references.
Then she looked at Vincent.
“I think I know what they were building.”
Vincent already knew too.
The dinner had not been arranged to prove Maria was dangerous.
May you like
Maria was only the tool.
The real target had been him.
