Chapter 1

Megan did not look at Laura.

She looked at the floor.

That was the first thing Laura noticed.

Adrian was still half-covered by overturned silver trays beside the service station.

Megan sat against the collapsed family-history display, one hand pressed against her cheek.

Acrylic portraits and engraved plaques surrounded her gown.

Laura expected fury.

Instead, Megan reached toward one fallen photograph.

Fast.

Too fast.

Laura’s heel came down on the edge of the frame before Megan could take it.

The ballroom became silent again.

Megan’s hand froze.

Laura held Emma against one shoulder.

The child’s small fingers remained wrapped around her lapel.

Her reddened cheek rested beneath Laura’s jaw.

Laura looked down at the photograph.

Two young women stood together at an old Moretti charity gala.

One was Megan.

Much younger.

Beside her stood a woman Laura had never met.

Same pale eyes.

Same small chin.

Same slight dimple near the left corner of the mouth.

Laura’s breathing changed.

She slowly looked at Emma.

Then back at the photograph.

The resemblance was impossible to ignore.

Megan reached again.

“Give me that.”

Her voice came out too quickly.

Laura did not move.

Adrian pushed a tray off his chest.

“Laura.”

She looked toward him.

He stopped.

Her voice was quiet.

“Who is she?”

Nobody answered.

Laura bent without putting Emma down and lifted the frame.

An engraved plaque had fallen beside it.

CLAIRE BENNETT

MORETTI FAMILY RELIEF FOUNDATION

2019–2022

Laura’s fingers tightened around the frame.

She knew that name.

Not from family history.

From Emma’s adoption paperwork.

Claire Bennett.

Biological mother.

Deceased.

Laura slowly raised her eyes toward Megan.

The color had disappeared from her face.

“You knew her.”

Megan’s lips parted.

Nothing came.

Adrian stood.

Laura looked at him next.

His breathing had become shallow.

That interested her even more.

She stepped closer.

“You both knew her.”

Megan finally recovered.

“She worked for the foundation.”

“That wasn't the question.”

The silence returned.

Laura’s hand moved slowly across Emma’s back.

The little girl had stopped crying now.

She was watching the adults.

That made Laura’s voice colder.

“My daughter’s birth mother worked for this family.”

Megan swallowed.

“You adopted her legally.”

Again, not an answer.

Laura looked toward the family archivist.

“Bring me every record connected to Claire Bennett.”

Megan immediately stood.

“No.”

Laura’s eyes moved toward her.

One word had betrayed more than an hour of explanation could have.

“Why?”

Megan’s fingers curled against her gown.

“These files have nothing to do with Emma.”

Laura looked down at the photograph.

Claire’s eyes.

Emma’s eyes.

Then at Adrian.

He refused to meet her gaze.

Laura’s thumb stopped moving against her signet ring.

“The woman you said had nothing to do with this family is hanging in our family-history display.”

Megan whispered:

“She wasn't family.”

Laura looked at Emma.

Then back at her.

“That sentence seems important to you.”

Megan’s breath caught.

The archivist returned carrying a slim digital tablet.

Her expression was confused.

“Laura…”

“What?”

“There are references to Claire.”

She hesitated.

“But the physical file is missing.”

Megan closed her eyes.

Laura noticed.

The archivist continued.

“It was removed from storage three years ago.”

“When?”

The woman looked at the access log.

Then at Adrian.

“Two days after Emma was born.”

May you like

The ballroom went still.

Adrian had accessed Claire Bennett’s family file before Laura had ever known Emma existed.
