Chapter 11

Megan could not read the letter.
Laura did.
Silently first.
Her face changed halfway through.
Then she looked toward Megan.
“Do you want me to?”
Megan’s breathing was uneven.
She nodded.
Laura read only the parts Claire intended for family.
Claire apologized.
Not for Emma.
For the betrayal.
She admitted falling in love with Adrian during the separation.
Admitted knowing it would devastate Megan.
Then:
If there is one thing I need you to believe, it is that Emma did not betray you.
Megan covered her mouth.
Laura continued.
Do not make her carry what belongs to me and Adrian.
Megan’s shoulders began shaking.
For years she had done exactly that.
Every time Emma entered the room.
Every resemblance.
Every birthday.
Every photograph.
Megan had punished the child internally for a betrayal committed before she was born.
The banquet slap simply made the hidden cruelty visible.
Laura lowered the page.
Megan whispered:
“Keep going.”
Claire wrote that she did not know whether Adrian would ever acknowledge Emma.
She no longer trusted him to.
If Laura became Emma’s mother, Claire wanted Laura to know the child was never unwanted.
Only complicated.
Then the final line to Megan:
You were my sister before he was either of our mistakes.
Megan bent forward.
No dramatic scream.
No collapse.
Just quiet sobbing into both hands.
Adrian watched.
His face hardened.
Maybe because grief excluded him.
Maybe because Claire’s words stripped away the story that both women had fought over him.
Laura folded the letter.
Adrian said:
“She wrote it when she was angry.”
Megan’s head lifted.
Her eyes were red.
“Don't.”
One word.
He stopped.
“You've explained her enough.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
Megan continued.
“You explained her to the agency.”
“To Laura.”
“To me.”
“To yourself.”
Her voice trembled.
“No more.”
Power shifted completely.
Adrian had controlled the story for four years.
Now the women inside it had the original.
Laura looked at him.
“You are removed from every foundation role effective now.”
His eyes hardened.
“You don't have unilateral authority.”
“I do for emergency suspension.”
“Then I'll challenge it.”
“You should.”
That answer confused him.
Laura continued.
“And you’ll do it with auditors looking at every dollar.”
His confidence weakened.
Then Megan removed her wedding ring.
She did not throw it.
She placed it beside Claire’s letter.
Adrian stared.
“Megan.”
She looked at him.
“I don't know whether I hate you.”
His face changed.
“That isn't the part you should fear.”
She stood.
“The part you should fear is that I no longer need an answer before leaving.”
And she walked out.
But at the doorway she stopped.
Looked back at Laura.
“Emma deserves my apology.”
Laura’s face hardened.
“She deserves safety first.”
May you like
Megan nodded.
For once, she did not argue.
