Chapter 6

The clinic would not release the report casually.
Laura respected that.
Counsel obtained appropriate authorization through the estate handling Claire’s archived medical materials.
It took two days.
During those two days, nobody ate together.
The banquet hall remained closed.
Emma asked why.
Laura gave her the only answer appropriate for a three-year-old.
“Grown-ups are fixing a mistake.”
Emma touched Laura’s cheek.
“Big mistake?”
Laura looked toward the empty family table.
“Yes.”
Megan stayed at a hotel.
Adrian remained at the family residence under limited access while financial records were reviewed.
He still attended meetings with counsel.
Still wore expensive suits.
Still tried to look like the man who controlled outcomes.
But every time someone mentioned the clinic, his hand moved toward his wedding ring.
Megan noticed.
On the second evening she asked Laura for a private conversation.
Laura agreed only with counsel nearby.
Megan sat across from her.
No pearls.
No diamonds.
Only her wedding ring.
“You think I hate Emma because she might be Adrian’s.”
Laura studied her.
“You slapped her.”
Megan closed her eyes.
“I know.”
“That isn't an answer.”
Megan looked down at her hands.
“I hated Claire.”
There it was.
Not polished.
Not defended.
“I loved her too.”
Her voice weakened.
“She was my sister before she was the person who slept with my husband.”
Laura waited.
Megan continued.
After Claire became pregnant, she called Megan.
Not to confess the father’s identity.
To apologize.
Megan refused the call.
Then another.
Then another.
Eventually Claire stopped trying.
“I told myself she was apologizing for ruining my marriage.”
Megan’s mouth trembled.
“I didn't know she was trying to tell me she was sick.”
Laura frowned.
“Sick?”
Claire had developed a cardiac complication after pregnancy.
Manageable.
But serious.
Megan learned only after the highway accident that killed her.
“That’s why I arranged Emma’s placement.”
Laura stared at her.
Megan’s voice dropped.
“Guilt.”
Not only secrecy.
Not only control.
“I couldn't raise her.”
Her eyes filled.
“I couldn't send her to strangers.”
“So you sent her to me.”
“Yes.”
“Without telling me why.”
“Yes.”
Laura looked away.
Megan had made Laura a mother through a lie.
And Emma had still become the most real relationship in Laura’s life.
That contradiction hurt.
Then Megan said something else.
“Adrian didn't want you to adopt her.”
Laura turned back.
“What?”
“He wanted Emma placed out of state.”
Adrian had argued an outside adoption would protect everyone.
Megan overruled him.
She contacted the agency herself.
Laura felt the power balance shift again.
Megan had hidden the truth.
But she had also kept Emma close when Adrian wanted the child gone from the family entirely.
Laura asked:
“Why?”
Megan’s fingers tightened.
“Because I didn't trust him.”
The clinic result had not yet arrived.
But Megan had apparently suspected for years that Adrian knew far more about Emma than he admitted.
Then Laura’s attorney entered carrying the archived report.
The envelope was sealed.
Megan stopped breathing.
May you like
Laura looked at it.
The answer everyone had built their lives around was finally inside the room.
