Chapter 5

Adrian refused to answer questions about paternity.

That refusal became its own answer without proving anything.

Laura understood the difference.

She wanted evidence.

Not rage.

Megan wanted something else.

She wanted certainty immediately.

“You slept with her.”

Her voice was shaking.

Adrian looked toward the guests.

Laura noticed.

He still cared about witnesses.

Megan followed his gaze.

Something hardened in her.

“For once, look at me.”

He did.

“Yes.”

One word.

Twenty years of marriage shifted.

Megan’s hands fell to her sides.

No scream.

No slap.

Just silence.

Adrian continued quickly.

“You and I were separated.”

“She was my sister.”

“I know.”

Megan’s breath broke.

That answer was worse.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“And you still—”

Her voice disappeared.

Adrian tried to move closer.

Megan stepped back.

Laura watched her sister-in-law’s arrogance disintegrate.

For the first time, Megan’s cruelty toward Emma had a shape.

Betrayal.

Humiliation.

A child whose face recreated it.

Still unforgivable.

But understandable.

Laura turned toward Adrian.

“Did you know Claire was pregnant?”

“Yes.”

Megan closed her eyes.

“Did you know Emma might be yours?”

A pause.

“Yes.”

The ballroom went silent.

Adrian immediately added:

“Might.”

Laura heard the emphasis.

Megan did too.

“What did you do?”

Adrian admitted he paid Claire’s rent during pregnancy.

Medical care.

Living expenses.

Not from personal accounts.

From a discretionary family-assistance fund he controlled.

Laura’s eyes narrowed.

“How much?”

“About eighty thousand.”

“Why hide it?”

Adrian looked at Megan.

That was answer enough.

Megan laughed softly.

Empty.

“You used family money to hide an affair with my sister.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“I was helping her.”

“You were buying silence.”

“No.”

Megan’s voice rose for the first time.

“You bought her apartment.”

“She was pregnant.”

“With whose child?”

Adrian said nothing.

Laura asked:

“Was there a paternity test?”

He turned toward her.

“No.”

Too fast.

Laura noticed.

Megan noticed faster.

“You're lying.”

Adrian’s nostrils flared.

“There was no completed test.”

Different sentence.

Laura’s expression cooled.

“What does that mean?”

Claire had scheduled prenatal paternity testing.

Adrian paid the clinic.

Then canceled.

According to him.

Laura requested the payment history.

The clinic still existed.

Their archives showed a test had not been canceled.

A sample had been collected from Claire.

Another from Adrian.

The report was released electronically four months before Emma’s birth.

Megan stared at her husband.

“You saw the result.”

Adrian’s breathing became shallow.

“No.”

The clinic log contradicted him.

Result opened.

User portal:

A. Moretti.

Three times.

Laura leaned back.

May you like

Adrian had known the paternity result for nearly four years.

He had simply never told anyone what it said.
