Chapter 9

Megan did not speak to Adrian for almost an hour.

That silence frightened him more than her anger.

She sat beside the ballroom windows while auditors reconstructed the transfers.

Adrian paced.

Laura watched both.

Finally Megan looked at him.

“How?”

He stopped.

“My authorization was on your investment account.”

“For emergencies.”

“It was an emergency.”

Megan’s face became completely still.

Laura recognized that stillness.

The moment emotion becomes something colder.

“You slept with my sister.”

Silence.

“You had a child with her.”

Silence.

“You used charity money to keep her quiet.”

Silence.

“Then stole from me to replace it.”

Adrian’s voice hardened.

“I prevented a scandal that would have destroyed us.”

Megan stood.

“No.”

Her eyes held his.

“You prevented me from choosing whether I still wanted us.”

That sentence landed harder than anything else.

Control.

That had been Adrian’s real obsession.

Not marriage.

Not family.

Removing everyone else’s ability to choose.

Claire could not choose when to tell Megan.

Megan could not choose whether to remain married.

Laura could not choose whether to adopt Emma with full knowledge.

Emma could not choose anything at all.

Adrian had arranged every truth around what protected him.

Then Laura’s investigator returned from the old adoption agency.

A retired caseworker remembered Adrian.

Very well.

“He came before Megan.”

Laura looked up.

“What?”

Three days after Claire died, Adrian contacted the agency privately.

He asked whether an adoption could be completed without identifying a biological father if no father appeared on the birth certificate.

The caseworker told him yes, depending on legal circumstances.

Then Adrian asked:

“Could the adoptive family ever force the agency to reveal him later?”

Laura’s jaw tightened.

He had researched how invisible he could remain.

But that was not the worst part.

The caseworker had retained handwritten meeting notes.

Adrian proposed one preferred placement.

Not out of state.

Laura.

Megan stared at him.

“You told me you didn't want Laura.”

Adrian said nothing.

Laura’s eyes narrowed.

Megan continued.

“You said I was the reason Emma stayed close.”

Silence.

The story shifted again.

Adrian had told Megan he wanted Emma gone.

Told the agency he wanted Laura.

Why?

Laura asked.

He looked toward her.

No answer.

The caseworker’s notes provided one.

Father believes placement with Laura M. would reduce likelihood of external questions because adoptive parent is within trusted family structure.

Laura felt something cold move through her.

Megan had believed she chose Laura out of guilt.

In reality, Adrian had guided both women toward the same decision.

May you like

He had not merely allowed Laura to adopt Emma.

He had engineered it.
