Chapter 13

Megan stared at the transactions.

“I never received these.”

The auditor nodded.

“Not directly.”

The money paid expenses connected to companies Megan owned.

Insurance premiums.

Property taxes.

A private gallery lease.

Vendor debts.

Adrian had been using family money to quietly support her lifestyle.

Megan looked at him.

“Why?”

His eyes hardened.

“Because your businesses were losing money.”

“You told me they were profitable.”

“They were becoming profitable.”

“You lied.”

“I protected you.”

The phrase returned.

Again.

Protection used as control.

Megan’s fingers slowly closed.

“You didn't want me financially independent.”

Adrian laughed.

“That’s ridiculous.”

The auditor disagreed.

Adrian had repeatedly blocked refinancing offers that would have reduced Megan’s reliance on family-managed credit.

He redirected expenses through accounts he controlled.

Whenever Megan discussed selling one business, he encouraged her to keep it.

Not because he believed in the business.

Because the debt gave him leverage.

Megan’s face became still.

For years she believed she remained in the marriage partly because separating would collapse her companies.

Adrian had quietly made sure that was true.

Laura watched the realization arrive.

The affair was betrayal.

The hidden child was betrayal.

But this was control embedded into daily life.

Adrian saw the room turning.

He stood.

“I paid her debts.”

Megan looked up.

“With money that wasn't yours.”

“I kept your life intact.”

“No.”

Her voice softened.

“You kept the exit expensive.”

The room went silent.

Adrian’s confidence cracked.

Then Laura looked toward the council.

“This is no longer only about Emma.”

Adrian had used Moretti institutions as private tools.

Foundation money for Claire.

Family accounts for Megan.

Operational influence to conceal paternity.

Agency contacts to shape adoption.

Every system became a way to keep truth inside boundaries he controlled.

The council suspended him from all operational roles pending outside investigation.

Adrian turned toward Laura.

“You think you've won?”

She studied him.

“This isn't a game.”

“It always is.”

That answer revealed him.

Maybe more than any document.

Adrian had spent years treating relationships as positions.

Megan.

Claire.

Laura.

Emma.

Family.

All pieces.

Then one trustee asked:

“What happens to his biological rights concerning Emma?”

The room changed.

Laura’s fingers stopped moving.

Adrian looked toward her.

For the first time in the entire story, he smiled with real confidence.

“There it is.”

Laura felt the threat immediately.

Legal adoption had terminated or resolved parental rights through the original process.

But if Adrian argued fraud or undisclosed paternity—

the question could become complicated.

Not necessarily successful.

Complicated was enough.

Adrian looked at Laura.

“You wanted outside systems?”

His eyes hardened.

May you like

“Let's see how much you like them when I use one.”

For the first time since the banquet, Laura felt control move away from her.
