Chapter 12

Daphne wrote to Tessa.

Tessa brought me the envelope unopened.

“What should I do?”

“Your letter.”

She frowned.

“I don’t know.”

“Then don’t decide today.”

She kept it for two weeks.

Then read it.

Did not show me.

Good.

Later she told me only one thing.

“She didn’t ask me to forgive her.”

Progress.

Daphne had written that she used Tessa’s low position because she assumed nobody would believe her against the woman marrying Sebastian Vale.

True.

She admitted the wrist restraint.

The food restrictions.

The threats.

No explanations.

No Elliot blame.

No childhood wound.

Just actions.

Tessa did not answer.

That was also valid.

Daphne left the city eventually.

No Vale role.

No marriage.

No access.

She kept her personal money.

Her family remained separate.

I did not destroy them because one woman betrayed me.

Collective punishment is easy.

Precision is harder.

Months later, Daphne sent one message to me.

I mistook being heard for being obeyed.

Interesting.

I did not respond.

Some insights do not require applause.

Marcus relocated too.

He tried building a smaller operation with old supporters.

Three joined.

Nine did not.

Good information.

I left them alone as long as they stayed outside my territory.

Not every rival needs war.

Elliot received the harshest internal consequence.

Isolation from every network he once touched.

No communications role.

No access to voice archives.

No one carrying his messages through Vale.

He asked me once:

“Do you know what silence does to a man like me?”

“Yes.”

May you like

That was why.

A man who built power from other people’s voices would live without borrowing one again.
