Chapter 5

Daphne stood so quickly her chair hit the floor.
“No.”
Real fear.
She did not know.
Good.
Elliot laughed.
“You wanted his authority.”
“Inside the house.”
“You thought power stops at the dining room?”
There.
Daphne had opened a door she imagined she controlled.
Elliot planned to walk through it.
The scheduled recording announced that after my marriage, I intended to take a “private family role” and transfer operational leadership temporarily to a three-person committee.
Names?
Elliot.
Daphne.
And my cousin Marcus.
I knew two.
Marcus was not at dinner.
That worried me.
“Did Marcus know?”
Elliot hesitated.
“Yes.”
Daphne whispered:
“You never told me.”
He looked at her almost kindly.
“You were the proof of concept.”
That destroyed something in her face.
Good.
Not because I enjoyed it.
Because manipulation feels different when the manipulator realizes she was also a tool.
I asked Elliot:
“What did you expect captains to do after hearing one recording?”
“Not obey forever.”
He shrugged.
“Pause.”
Exactly.
That was enough.
If a boss announces a sudden transition, loyal men do not immediately rebel.
They call.
Confirm.
Wait.
During that confusion, Marcus would enter two properties.
Elliot would take communications.
Daphne would control the estate.
Then my actual voice would become one claim among several.
That was the genius.
Not convincing everyone forever.
Making truth temporarily arguable.
I looked at my signet ring.
For years I believed symbols protected legitimacy.
Ring.
House.
Voice.
Apparently voice could be copied.
A ring could be photographed.
A house could be redirected.
So what remained?
People.
Who had seen me act consistently long enough to know when something sounded wrong.
That was why only one captain obeyed.
The others called.
Elliot had miscalculated loyalty.
Not everyone followed sound.
Some followed relationship.
I turned to Rafe.
“Cancel the scheduled send.”
He nodded.
Already done.
Then Tessa spoke.
Quiet.
“Sir.”
I looked toward her.
“There’s another recording.”
Of course.
“What?”
Her face tightened.
“One with me screaming.”
The room went silent.
Daphne looked away.
May you like
Elliot did not.
That recording had already been made.
