Chapter 6

Tessa’s scream had been recorded three days earlier.

Not staged.

Real.

Daphne had ordered her punished after she found one of Elliot’s phones charging in the linen closet.

Tessa did not know what it was.

She touched it.

Daphne accused her of spying.

Then played my fake command authorizing punishment.

During the restraint, Tessa cried out.

Elliot recorded it from the hallway.

Why?

I asked him directly.

He answered without shame.

“Emotion makes stories believable.”

My hands went cold.

“What story?”

If the transition message failed, they had a second plan.

A recording assembled from my voice and Tessa’s scream.

Enough to suggest I had personally ordered severe abuse of household staff.

Not public release.

Internal.

Captains only.

“Why?”

“Insurance.”

If I challenged the stepping-down announcement, Elliot could circulate the second clip.

Suddenly every captain would have two versions of Sebastian Vale.

One retiring voluntarily.

One violently unstable.

Confusion grows.

Authority slows.

That was all they needed.

Tessa looked sick.

She had not merely been punished.

Her fear had been harvested as material.

I walked toward Elliot.

He expected violence.

I stopped inches away.

“You used her pain as an audio prop.”

He lifted his chin.

“You use fear every day.”

There.

He thought equivalence protected him.

I spoke quietly.

“Yes.”

“I have frightened men.”

“I have threatened enemies.”

“I have made rooms go silent.”

Then:

“But I own the words I say.”

Silence.

“You built cruelty in my voice and made someone else carry the bruise.”

For the first time, he looked away.

Daphne whispered:

“I didn’t know about the scream.”

Tessa turned toward her.

“No.”

Her voice shook.

“You only tied my hands.”

Daphne went pale.

Good.

Specificity destroys selective innocence.

I looked at Tessa.

“You don’t have to stay.”

She nodded.

“I know.”

First time she said it like she believed it.

Then Rafe entered with another message.

Marcus had been stopped at the south property.

Not alone.

Three men with him.

And one sealed case containing spare estate phones.

The conspiracy had already begun moving before dinner.

We were not preventing a future takeover.

We were interrupting one already in progress.
