Chapter 16

Daphne returned once.
Eighteen months later.
Not to reconcile.
To testify privately to the captains who had obeyed her fake household orders.
Her request.
I allowed it.
She stood before twelve people.
No jewelry.
No Vale symbol.
She said:
“I knew the recordings were false.”
No excuse.
“I used Sebastian’s voice because my own instructions were questioned.”
Silence.
“I told myself that meant the staff were disrespecting me.”
Then:
“What it actually meant was that I had not earned their trust.”
Good.
She admitted punishing Tessa.
Admitted letting Elliot expand the scheme.
Admitted knowing Vaughn access was being arranged.
Then she stopped.
One captain asked:
“Why tell us now?”
Daphne answered:
“Because some of you still describe what happened as Elliot’s voice scam.”
She shook her head.
“It worked because people like me wanted authority without accountability.”
That was better than apology.
Analysis.
Ownership.
Afterward she asked if she could see Tessa.
I said:
“Ask Tessa.”
Correct channel.
Tessa declined.
Daphne accepted.
Then she left.
Before going, she looked at me.
“I was afraid marrying you would make me disappear.”
I nodded.
“I know.”
“So I tried to disappear you first.”
There it was.
Whole tragedy in one sentence.
I did not comfort her.
I also did not deny she had been afraid.

Fear is real.
What we build from it still belongs to us.
