Chapter 15

A year after the broken engagement, I hosted another formal dinner.

Not engagement.

Business.

Daphne absent.

Marcus absent.

Elliot irrelevant.

Tessa oversaw household operations.

Rafe handled security.

Before guests arrived, we tested the new command system.

Rafe played a recording in my voice:

“Open the west gate immediately.”

One guard replied:

“Confirm second source.”

Good.

I personally confirmed false.

Gate stayed closed.

Simple.

Then Tessa played another.

My voice ordering the kitchen to remove dinner from a junior servant who had insulted a guest.

The chef responded:

“Direct confirmation required for staff discipline.”

Good.

No one obeyed.

I laughed.

“My house has become extremely annoying.”

Tessa smiled.

“Safer.”

Fair.

During dinner, one old associate complained the new rules made me look distrusted.

I answered:

“They make impersonating me less useful.”

He shrugged.

“Same thing.”

“No.”

Trust is not the absence of verification.

Sometimes verification protects trust from counterfeit certainty.

He did not love that.

Fine.

Later, candles reflected across crystal.

Music played.

For the first time in months, I heard my own voice through a speaker and did not feel immediate anger.

It was a genuine recording introducing a charity auction from years earlier.

Tessa looked toward me.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

Then:

“Confirming.”

She laughed.

Good.

May you like

The voice was mine.

The choice to obey it was still theirs.
