Chapter 8

The captain meeting lasted until sunrise.
Not everyone chose me immediately.
Good.
I preferred uncertainty spoken aloud.
Twelve senior men.
I played the fake resignation.
Then my actual voice.
Same tone.
Same pauses.
Nearly perfect.
I asked:
“How would you know?”
Silence.
That was the real problem.
One captain said:
“Call you.”
“Yes.”
“What if you don’t answer?”
“Call Rafe.”
“What if he doesn’t?”
Another said:
“Meet in person.”
Good.
We built verification into the organization that morning.
Not codes written on paper.
Not complicated technology.
Human confirmation.
Major commands affecting leadership, territory, or family security required two independent confirmations from known people.
No single recording.
No single message.
No single voice.
Elliot’s scheme had exposed a structural weakness.
I fixed it.
Marcus hated that even from outside.
He wanted the lesson to be that I had become vulnerable.
It was.
So adapt.
That is what competent leaders do.
Daphne listened from another room under guard.
Later she asked to speak.
I allowed it.
She looked exhausted.
No engagement glamour left.
“Did you ever intend to give me authority after we married?”
“Over what?”
“The house.”
“Yes.”
Her eyes filled.
“How much?”
“As much as we agreed.”
That was the problem.
We never clearly agreed.
I assumed partnership would develop naturally.
She feared remaining decorative beside a Mafia boss.
Elliot noticed.
He told her I would always keep real authority separate.
That marriage without command meant she was ornamental.
She believed him because part of her already feared it.
“So you started using my voice.”
She cried.
“At first just to make people listen.”
There.
The first compromise always sounds small.
Then she liked the effect.
Doors opened.
Staff stopped questioning her.
She could say, “Sebastian ordered it,” and resistance disappeared.
Eventually she no longer needed to persuade anyone.
Borrowed authority became addictive.
I asked:
“When did you first punish Tessa?”
Three weeks earlier.
Not six.
May you like
There had been escalation.
I wanted to understand exactly where ambition became cruelty.
