Chapter 1

Raffaele’s first order was not about Bianca.

It was about Sophia.

“Doctor. Now.”

Sophia insisted she was fine.

Raffaele ignored her.

She was seven months pregnant, had just been shoved into a wall, and was still holding one hand protectively beneath her stomach.

Dr. Elaine Foster, a physician attending the wedding as a guest, examined her in a private suite before an ambulance arrived.

“Baby’s heart rate sounds normal,” Elaine said. “But she needs to be evaluated properly.”

Sophia looked toward Emma.

“I’m not leaving her.”

“She comes with us,” Raffaele said.

Emma was still crying over the dress.

Not because she understood money or humiliation.

Because she had been proud of being flower girl.

She kept holding the little bouquet even after half her skirt had been cut away.

Raffaele crouched beside her.

“You did nothing wrong.”

“Bianca says I’m cheap.”

“That’s an adult saying something ugly because she forgot how to behave.”

Emma frowned through tears.

“Am I cheap?”

“No.”

That was enough for her.

For now.

Sophia and Emma left for the hospital with trusted security.

Raffaele stayed behind with his attorney, Claire Donnelly.

Bianca had been moved to one room.

Gregory to another.

Neither was allowed near the Carbones.

Nobody touched them again.

Claire walked through the wrecked reception hall, examining the overturned garment rack, fallen ceremony screens, scattered flower petals, and the strip of Emma’s dress still lying near the marble threshold.

“Security footage?”

“Preserve all of it.”

“Guest video?”

“Request copies. No pressure.”

Raffaele looked toward the torn fabric.

Something was sewn into the hem.

A narrow ivory label.

Claire picked it up carefully.

The dress had come from Bellweather Atelier.

The same private bridal house that made Bianca’s gown.

Claire looked at him.

“That dress isn’t cheap.”

“I know.”

Raffaele had paid the invoice himself.

Emma’s flower-girl dress had cost more than most adults spent on formalwear.

That made Bianca’s exact insult strange.

Cheap little girls.

Not ugly.

Not spoiled.

Cheap.

Gregory was brought past the reception entrance with his attorney.

He noticed the strip of fabric in Claire’s evidence bag.

His expression changed again.

Raffaele caught it.

Claire did too.

She said nothing until Gregory disappeared down the hall.

Then:

“He knows why that label matters.”

Raffaele stared after him.

“Find out.”

An hour later, Sophia called from the hospital.

She and the baby were stable.

Observation overnight.

No signs of immediate complications.

Raffaele closed his eyes for the first time all evening.

Then Sophia said:

“Dad?”

“Yes.”

“This wasn’t the first time Bianca called us cheap.”

His eyes opened.

“What?”

Sophia became quiet.

“She’s been saying things for months.”

“And you never told me?”

“I thought she was just insecure.”

Raffaele looked again at the torn dress.

Whatever had happened at the wedding had started long before anyone picked up the scissors.
