Chapter 15

A year after the wedding that never happened, Raffaele attended a small garden dinner at Sophia’s house.

No capos.

No private orchestra.

No garment racks.

No brides.

Emma was four now.

She wore the repaired Bellweather dress even though Sophia had specifically asked her not to because they were eating pasta.

The stripe across the skirt remained visible.

Raffaele pointed at it.

“You plan to wear that until college?”

“Yes.”

“Excellent.”

Sophia entered carrying baby Lily.

“You encourage her.”

“Someone has to.”

“You bought the original.”

“Best investment I made that year.”

Sophia gave him a look.

He deserved it.

After dinner, Emma dragged Raffaele outside to inspect a row of flowers she claimed were hers despite Sophia having planted all of them.

Baby Lily slept against Sophia’s shoulder.

For a while, nothing important happened.

Raffaele had learned to appreciate that.

The financial cases were finished.

Gregory had faced consequences.

Bianca had faced consequences.

The fake partnership had been exposed.

Hale Event Management no longer existed in the form Gregory tried to save.

Carbone company controls had changed.

Emma no longer cried when someone mentioned weddings.

Sophia’s pregnancy had ended safely.

Every factual question from that day had an answer.

Then Sophia handed Raffaele a folder.

“What’s this?”

“My new contract.”

He opened it.

Her advisory firm would continue reviewing several Carbone businesses.

Independent.

Limited hours.

No executive title.

No obligation to attend family meetings.

No expectation that her daughters would grow up around the organization.

Raffaele read it carefully.

That alone made Sophia smile.

“You’re actually reading.”

“I’ve been threatened.”

“By accountants?”

“The worst kind of people.”

He reached the final page.

The agreement lasted one year.

Not five.

Not indefinite.

“One year?”

Sophia nodded.

“And after?”

“I decide whether I still want to do this.”

Raffaele looked at her.

“Work with me?”

“Work anywhere near the family.”

That was the one question neither the wedding nor the investigation had answered.

Sophia loved her father.

She respected some of what he had changed.

But she had spent years pushing against a world where loyalty repeatedly became an excuse for ignoring warning signs.

Gregory had not created that culture.

He had exploited it.

Raffaele could repair policies.

He could remove people.

He could accept scrutiny.

He could not demand that Sophia believe the changes would last.

“I want you here,” he said.

“I know.”

“I want the girls here.”

“I know.”

He looked at the one-year term again.

Then signed.

Sophia seemed surprised.

“No argument?”

“No.”

“You hate temporary arrangements.”

“I hate losing my daughter more.”

Sophia became quiet.

Raffaele handed the contract back.

Emma came running through the garden.

“Grandpa!”

“What?”

“My dress got sauce.”

Sophia closed her eyes.

Raffaele looked at the red stain across the repaired skirt.

Then at his daughter.

“I see nothing.”

“You are the reason she’s impossible.”

“Genetics.”

Sophia laughed.

Raffaele lifted Emma into his arms.

The little girl no longer cared that someone had once called her cheap.

The damaged dress no longer belonged to Bianca’s cruelty.

The wedding no longer belonged to Gregory’s scheme.

And Raffaele no longer assumed loving his family gave him the right to decide where they belonged.

Whether Sophia stayed inside the Carbone world after that one year would be her choice.

For once, Raffaele Carbone understood that protecting his family sometimes meant allowing them to walk away from everything he had spent his life building.
