Chapter 8

Raffaele made the decision on Monday morning.

Gregory was suspended from every Carbone-affiliated company and vendor relationship.

Hale Event Management contracts were frozen pending independent review.

Then Raffaele went further.

He voluntarily expanded the audit beyond the wedding and Hale businesses to every legitimate Carbone entity Gregory had touched during the previous three years.

His own approvals included.

Sophia objected.

“Dad, that’s going to open everything.”

“I know.”

“Not just Gregory.”

“I know.”

“Board governance. Family expenses. Delegated signatures. Vendors.”

“I know.”

Claire leaned back.

“She gets her repetition from you.”

Neither smiled.

Sophia continued.

“You could expose problems that have nothing to do with this.”

“Yes.”

“Then why?”

Raffaele looked at his daughter.

“Because I spent twelve years saying Gregory was trustworthy.”

He paused.

“If I was wrong, I want to know where being wrong cost other people.”

The choice immediately created consequences.

Two longtime vendors retained lawyers.

A senior Carbone manager resigned rather than participate.

One family member accused Raffaele of turning a wedding fight into an excuse to dismantle his own network.

Another warned that regulators might become interested if accounting failures appeared.

Raffaele accepted that risk.

He also reported Bianca’s conduct and the reception violence accurately.

Including his own actions.

Gregory had grabbed his arm before Raffaele punched him.

Bianca had raised scissors toward Sophia before Raffaele disarmed and slapped her.

Witnesses and video existed.

Raffaele did not ask anyone to edit the story.

His lawyer warned:

“You may still face scrutiny.”

“Good.”

Claire looked at him.

“That is not normally how clients respond.”

“I’m trying something my daughter keeps recommending.”

“What?”

“Consequences.”

Sophia rolled her eyes.

The wedding was formally canceled.

Bianca moved out of the apartment she shared with Gregory.

She did not return the engagement ring immediately.

Raffaele did not care.

The dress incident had already ended any future wedding at his estate.

Then the auditors found something that changed the direction again.

Gregory’s financial problems were worse than expected.

But wedding money alone could not save him.

Even if Sophia had approved every inflated invoice, Hale Event Management would still be in serious trouble within six months.

Which meant Gregory’s expectation that marriage would “fix everything” required something larger than a few vendor payments.

Raffaele asked the auditor:

“What did he think he was getting?”

The answer came from a draft partnership proposal nobody in the Carbone family remembered approving.

Hale Event Management would become exclusive events operator for three Carbone-owned luxury properties.

Estimated annual revenue:

More than enough to stabilize Gregory’s company.

The document identified the deal as:

Post-marriage strategic integration.

Sophia stared at the signature line reserved for her.

May you like

It was blank.

But Gregory had already shown the draft to his lenders.
