Chapter 10

The brass key opened a deposit box.

Not at a bank.

At a private secure-storage company in Manhattan.

Lorenzo went with independent counsel.

Inside sat the external drive.

And a handwritten agreement.

Marcus had been negotiating with three younger capos.

If Lorenzo was removed under Phase Two, Victoria would become temporary matriarch.

But only for ninety days.

Afterward, operational command would transfer to Marcus.

Victoria had never signed it.

Her signature had been forged.

Her voice had been synthesized.

Exactly as Lorenzo’s had.

The system she created to impersonate Lorenzo had finally been turned against her.

That was only the first half of the twist.

The drive contained Marcus’s private recordings.

For three years he had been documenting Victoria.

Her admissions.

Her favors.

Her hidden ledgers.

Her arguments with Lorenzo.

Her instructions.

He intended to expose enough of her conduct to make the capos fear her—

then present himself as the man who could clean up both sides.

Lorenzo understood.

Marcus never planned to choose between them.

He planned to let Lorenzo and Victoria destroy each other.

Then inherit the room.

But one recording changed the story again.

Victoria and Marcus.

Eighteen months earlier.

Her voice:

“You will never lead this family.”

Marcus:

“Because I’m not Lorenzo?”

Victoria:

“Because you enjoy being obeyed more than you understand what obedience costs.”

Silence.

Then Marcus:

“So why keep protecting me?”

Victoria’s answer:

“Because you are my son.”

Lorenzo listened twice.

That was Victoria’s tragedy.

She saw Marcus clearly.

She simply refused to act on what she saw.

Every hidden payment.

Every covered mistake.

Every second chance.

She told herself she was protecting family.

She had actually trained Marcus to believe consequences were things his mother handled.

And Lorenzo had participated from the other side.

He treated Marcus as useful.

Aggressive.

Reliable enough.

He never looked closely at what Victoria kept repairing behind him.

The conspiracy was not born from one evil decision.

It grew from two senior family members who kept solving Marcus’s failures instead of making him face them.

Then came Isabella.

She wandered into the passage looking for a missing toy.

Found the duplicate ring.

Saw Marcus loading the drive into a case.

Marcus needed somewhere to hide the key while guests filled the hallway.

He slipped it into Isabella’s shoe, thinking he could retrieve it later.

Then she asked what he was doing.

Victoria arrived.

Marcus panicked.

The collar.

The passage.

The threat.

Victoria did not order the cruelty.

She saw it.

And let it continue because exposing Marcus in the middle of Lorenzo’s welcome party would expose everything she had hidden for years.

That was the major betrayal.

Victoria had not chosen Marcus because she believed he was innocent.

She chose him despite knowing exactly what he was becoming.

Lorenzo sat across from her that night.

The drive between them.

Victoria’s hands rested in her lap.

For the first time, they trembled.

“You knew.”

She looked at him.

“Yes.”

“How long?”

Her breath caught.

“Long enough.”

Lorenzo’s eyes hardened.

“And Isabella?”

Victoria closed hers.

“I thought he would frighten her and stop.”

His voice became quieter.

“That is not an answer.”

A tear slipped down her cheek.

She did not wipe it.

“I chose my son.”

Lorenzo stared at her.

Then at the ledger box.

Then at Amelia’s letter.

Every secret in the room had been justified with one phrase or another.

Family.

Protection.

Stability.

May you like

Love.

And every one had eventually become permission to hurt someone weaker.
