Chapter 7

Lorenzo did not accuse Victoria of murder.

That would have been easy.

Too easy.

He asked for records.

Hospital.

Medical.

Phone.

Security.

Everything from the week Amelia died.

Victoria sat across from him.

Her confidence returned through indignation.

“You think I killed her?”

“I think you hid something.”

“That is not the same accusation.”

“No.”

His voice lowered.

“It’s the one I can prove first.”

She looked away.

Claire reconstructed Amelia’s final days.

She had discovered the duplicate-ring protocol while reviewing estate planning after Isabella’s birth.

She objected to Victoria holding dormant authority without Lorenzo’s knowledge.

Amelia scheduled a private meeting with Lorenzo.

She never made it.

Her aneurysm ruptured that morning.

Natural.

Documented.

No evidence of poisoning.

No suspicious medication.

Victoria had not caused the death.

Lorenzo’s shoulders lowered by a fraction.

Relief mixed with anger.

Then Claire found the hidden part.

Amelia’s phone contained a deleted draft:

Victoria says Lorenzo doesn’t need to know because he would dismantle it.

Another:

Marcus already knows how to use the ring.

And another:

If anything happens to me, check the old library wall.

Lorenzo looked toward Victoria.

Her lips parted.

She genuinely had not known about that last message.

The old library wall was searched.

Behind one carved panel sat a small envelope.

Dusty.

Untouched for years.

Addressed to Lorenzo.

His hands trembled when he opened it.

Amelia’s handwriting.

Not a farewell.

A warning.

Victoria has convinced herself that emergency power is responsibility. Marcus has convinced himself that inherited access is entitlement. Neither understands the danger because both believe they love you.

Lorenzo stopped reading.

Anthony looked down.

Victoria’s face crumpled for one second.

Then hardened again.

Lorenzo continued.

If you ever read this, do not confuse their love with permission.

Underneath the letter was a copy of a financial ledger.

Early payments.

Marcus.

Small unauthorized withdrawals six years earlier.

Amelia had found the beginning of his theft too.

Victoria knew.

She had forced Marcus to repay some of it privately.

She never told Lorenzo.

Marcus stared at his mother.

“You said those records were destroyed.”

Victoria turned toward him.

“You were twenty-eight.”

“You covered for me.”

“I saved you.”

“No.”

His breathing changed.

“You owned me.”

The sentence hit her.

Marcus had spent six years under the weight of a secret Victoria could expose whenever he disobeyed.

Her protection had become control.

Now Lorenzo understood why Marcus always defended her.

Not only loyalty.

Fear.

Then Marcus looked at Lorenzo.

“She still has the original ledger.”

Victoria went pale.

Lorenzo’s eyes narrowed.

“Where?”

May you like

Marcus smiled bitterly.

“Ask her what she keeps beneath Isabella’s nursery.”
