Chapter 14

Victoria admitted removing the clause.

The admission happened in front of the council.

No private mercy.

No family-only explanation.

She stood at the far end of the table.

No pearls.

No rings except her wedding band.

Her hands looked strangely bare.

“I removed it after Amelia died.”

Lorenzo’s eyes stayed on her.

“Why?”

“Because external review would take time.”

“And?”

Her breath caught.

She looked toward the men around the table.

Then back at him.

“Because I believed no outsider had the right to decide whether a Bellandi child was safe.”

Lorenzo’s expression hardened.

“So you gave yourself that right.”

Victoria lowered her eyes.

“Yes.”

There it was.

The center of everything.

She genuinely believed authority was responsibility.

Then responsibility became permission.

The council received the entire archive.

Forged orders.

Voice files.

Financial ledgers.

Marcus’s takeover agreement.

Outside-rival contract.

Phase Two.

Deleted child-protection clause.

No one left untouched.

Several decisions from the previous four years would require review.

Some removed men would be reinstated or compensated.

Some contracts might be challenged.

Lorenzo’s authority would suffer.

He accepted it.

Marcus arrived with attorneys.

He did not sit near Victoria.

Their relationship looked severed before any formal consequence arrived.

Independent counsel outlined immediate suspensions and referrals.

Marcus’s financial and operational conduct would be investigated externally.

Victoria resigned every family position.

She did not wait to be removed.

Before signing, she looked at Lorenzo.

Her eyes were wet but steady.

“You know why I did it.”

He said nothing.

She continued.

“I watched your father nearly lose everything because people hesitated.”

Her fingers trembled around the pen.

“I promised myself this family would never become helpless.”

Lorenzo looked toward the gallery door.

Isabella was not there.

He had made sure of it.

His voice lowered.

“So you taught yourself helpless people could be used.”

Victoria flinched.

The pen stopped.

Lorenzo continued.

“My daughter was three.”

Victoria’s eyes closed.

When she opened them, the arrogance was gone.

“I know.”

“No.”

His voice stayed quiet.

“You know now.”

She signed.

Marcus laughed from across the room.

“You’re all pretending she's some tragic old woman.”

Victoria looked at her son.

His face was twisted with anger.

“She built me.”

Everyone went silent.

Marcus stood.

“She covered every mistake. Paid every debt. Threatened everyone who tried to expose me.”

His breath came faster.

“And now she gets to cry?”

Victoria’s face folded.

Lorenzo watched.

Marcus was cruel.

But the accusation was not false.

Victoria whispered:

“I ruined you.”

Marcus froze.

The words struck harder than denial.

She continued.

“I kept calling rescue what should have been consequence.”

His jaw trembled.

“Don’t.”

Her eyes filled.

“I loved you badly.”

Marcus stared.

For once, he had no weapon against acceptance.

He looked away first.

Then Claire approached Lorenzo with one final envelope.

“Amelia left instructions concerning the duplicate ring.”

Lorenzo’s hand stopped.

Victoria looked up.

Claire continued.

“They were never carried out.”

Lorenzo opened the envelope.

Amelia’s final recommendation was simple.

Destroy the second ring.

End the continuity system entirely.

No parallel authority.

No hidden substitute.

No person powerful enough to impersonate another.

Lorenzo looked at the ring inside its velvet box.

The same object Isabella had found.

The object that started the party collapse.

Then he closed the box.

“Bring Isabella.”

Victoria looked at him.

May you like

Her breathing changed.

Because she realized Lorenzo was not going to decide the ring’s fate alone.
