Chapter 13

Anthony found it.

A photograph taped inside an old cabinet.

Amelia.

Victoria.

A much younger Marcus.

Carlo Bellandi.

Taken eleven years earlier.

Before Isabella.

Before Amelia married Lorenzo.

On the back:

CONTINUITY COMMITTEE.

Lorenzo stared at it.

Victoria sat nearby.

Her face carried a different kind of shame.

“You knew Amelia before me?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“She worked for your father.”

Lorenzo’s eyes narrowed.

Amelia had told him she first met the Bellandis through a charity board.

That was not entirely true.

Victoria explained.

Amelia had been a junior compliance attorney reviewing Bellandi-owned legitimate businesses.

Carlo respected her.

She helped draft early safeguards around the continuity protocol.

Then she met Lorenzo.

They fell in love.

Carlo asked her to keep certain family governance matters separate from their relationship.

Amelia agreed.

At first.

Years later, when she realized Victoria was expanding the protocol beyond its intended limits, she broke that promise.

Not because she wanted power.

Because she realized the safeguards she helped design were becoming tools of control.

Lorenzo absorbed the betrayal slowly.

Even Amelia had hidden something from him.

For a moment anger rose.

Victoria saw.

“She loved you.”

Lorenzo looked at her.

“Don't explain my wife to me.”

Victoria lowered her eyes.

He continued reading Amelia’s old correspondence.

One line stopped him:

Lorenzo will destroy any system he thinks competes with his authority. If I tell him too early, he will hear disloyalty before he hears danger.

His breathing slowed.

Another person had been afraid of his reaction.

Even the woman who loved him most.

That pattern was becoming impossible to ignore.

Anthony watched silently.

Lorenzo turned.

“How many people knew Amelia worked on continuity?”

Anthony looked uncomfortable.

“Five.”

“Did you?”

“Yes.”

Lorenzo closed his eyes.

Of course.

Another silence kept for his protection.

Or everyone else’s.

He opened them again.

“I’m beginning to think nobody in this house ever told me anything.”

Anthony’s expression tightened.

“That isn't fair.”

Lorenzo laughed softly.

“Good.”

Anthony frowned.

Lorenzo stepped closer.

“I’m tired of fair stories.”

He looked toward Amelia’s photograph.

“She lied to me.”

Anthony nodded carefully.

“Yes.”

“She also tried to stop Victoria.”

“Yes.”

“Both can be true.”

Anthony’s shoulders lowered.

That was new for Lorenzo.

He had always sorted people into loyal or disloyal.

Useful or dangerous.

Now the truth kept arriving in combinations.

Then Claire entered.

She held the continuity committee’s original charter.

“One clause was removed from every later copy.”

Lorenzo looked at her.

“What clause?”

She read:

No emergency authority may be exercised against a minor child or used to alter custody without unanimous external review.

Victoria went pale.

Lorenzo slowly turned toward her.

May you like

She had not merely stretched the old protocol.

She had deleted the one rule specifically designed to prevent exactly what she prepared to do with Isabella.
