Chapter 8

The nursery floor was searched with Isabella elsewhere.

Lorenzo insisted on that.

No child should watch adults turn her room into a crime scene.

Beneath a removable floor panel sat a metal document box.

Victoria stood in the hallway.

Her face had become unreadable.

Inside were years of records.

Not one ledger.

Dozens.

Payments.

Favors.

Capo debts.

Medical expenses.

Private settlements.

Compromising information.

The architecture of Victoria’s influence.

Lorenzo read quietly.

Marcus watched his mother.

“You kept everything.”

Victoria did not look at him.

“Memory fails.”

His laugh came out bitter.

“Blackmail doesn’t.”

Her eyes snapped toward him.

“I never blackmailed you.”

Marcus stepped closer.

His breathing was faster now.

“You never had to say it.”

Lorenzo looked between them.

There it was again.

Silence as power.

Victoria had built an entire system where everybody knew she remembered what they owed.

That made commands unnecessary.

One ledger page contained Anthony’s name.

Lorenzo froze.

Anthony saw.

His shoulders lowered.

“Explain.”

Anthony did not pretend confusion.

“Twenty years ago, my brother owed money.”

“How much?”

“Enough.”

“Victoria paid it?”

“Yes.”

“And?”

Anthony looked toward her.

“I gave her information sometimes.”

Lorenzo’s face hardened.

“What information?”

“Council moods. Who was angry. Who was scared.”

His voice lowered.

“Nothing operational.”

Victoria interrupted.

“That’s a lie.”

Anthony turned.

She met his eyes.

“You told me when Lorenzo planned to remove Marcus from security after the warehouse failure.”

Lorenzo stared at him.

Anthony’s breathing stopped.

Another close betrayal.

“Why?”

Anthony’s hands opened helplessly.

“I thought she could calm Marcus before you destroyed him.”

Lorenzo laughed once.

No humor.

Everyone around him had justified concealment as prevention.

Prevent war.

Prevent humiliation.

Prevent retaliation.

Prevent Lorenzo.

He looked at the box.

“How many people?”

Claire counted.

At least eighteen senior figures had received private assistance, protection or favors through Victoria.

Half the council.

No wonder her influence felt permanent.

Then Claire found a sealed envelope inside the ledger box.

Marked:

PHASE TWO.

Victoria’s face changed.

Marcus saw it.

“So it exists.”

Lorenzo looked at her.

“You told me phase two was a vote.”

She remained silent.

Claire opened the envelope.

Inside were emergency orders.

Prepared.

Not yet executed.

One instructed estate security to remove Lorenzo from the primary residence if three medical evaluators declared him psychologically compromised.

Another transferred guardianship authority over Isabella temporarily—

to Victoria.

Lorenzo stopped breathing.

Victoria stepped forward.

“That was contingency.”

His eyes lifted.

“You prepared to take my daughter.”

“Only if you became dangerous.”

Marcus laughed softly.

Lorenzo turned.

Marcus’s face held something strange.

Satisfaction.

Victoria saw it too.

“What?”

Marcus looked at her.

“You still don’t know.”

Her confidence vanished.

May you like

He nodded toward the medical-evaluation forms.

“I chose the doctors.”
