Chapter 11

Lorenzo did not announce punishment that night.
Marcus expected rage.
He had planned around rage.
Instead, Lorenzo changed access.
Quietly.
Marcus’s capo credentials stopped working.
His estate security authorization disappeared.
His financial approvals froze.
The men assigned to him received new reporting lines.
By sunrise, Marcus still wore the capo pin.
It simply meant nothing.
He discovered it when he tried to enter the communications room.
Red light.
Access denied.
His breathing changed.
He tried again.
Red.
A bodyguard stood six feet away.
Marcus turned.
“You know who I am.”
The guard met his eyes.
“Yes.”
Nothing else.
Marcus hated the calm more than resistance.
He went to Lorenzo’s study.
Two capos stood outside.
They did not move aside.
“You're locking me out?”
Lorenzo’s voice came from inside.
“No.”
A pause.
“You locked yourself out years ago. I just changed the system to notice.”
Marcus’s jaw tightened.
Victoria watched from the corridor.
For decades she had been the person people approached to fix exactly this kind of consequence.
Marcus looked at her.
The old reflex.
Mother.
Fix it.
Victoria’s hands tightened around her pearls.
Then slowly loosened.
She looked away.
Marcus’s face changed.
That hurt him more than Lorenzo’s decision.
“You're choosing him?”
Victoria’s voice came rough.
“No.”
She finally looked at her son.
“I’m refusing to choose you again.”
Marcus stared.
His breathing quickened.
Then anger replaced shock.
“You think confession saves you?”
Victoria did not answer.
“You built it.”
Still nothing.
“You taught me.”
Her eyes filled.
“Yes.”
One word.
No defense.
Marcus recoiled as if she had struck him.
For the first time, his mother would not argue with reality for him.
Then he smiled.
Cold.
“If I go down, you do too.”
Victoria nodded.
“I know.”
That response destroyed the threat.
Marcus turned toward Lorenzo’s closed study.
“You hear that?”
The door opened.
Lorenzo stood there.
His expression calm.
“Yes.”
Marcus’s eyes sharpened.
“You going to protect her?”
Lorenzo looked at Victoria.
She held his gaze.
He remembered Isabella behind the wall.
The collar.
Amelia’s warning.
Joseph Marino.
The forged voice.
“No.”
Victoria closed her eyes.
It hurt.
But she nodded.
Lorenzo continued.
“Independent counsel gets everything.”
Marcus’s smile faded.
“All of it?”
“All.”
“The fake orders expose you too.”
“I know.”
“Half the family will challenge your decisions.”
“I know.”
“You could lose control.”
Lorenzo stepped closer.
His voice lowered.
“Then I lose what I never truly controlled.”
Marcus stared.
For the first time, Lorenzo was willing to risk power to end the system built around protecting it.
Then Claire arrived.
Her face was serious.
“The drive contains something else.”
Lorenzo looked at her.
“Another recording?”
“No.”
She held up a contract.
“Marcus wasn't planning only an internal takeover.”
Her eyes moved toward him.
“He promised an outside rival access to Bellandi routes after he became boss.”
May you like
Victoria’s face went white.
Marcus had been willing to sell pieces of the family he claimed he deserved to lead.
