Chapter 10

The answer came from Cordelia herself.
Not through confession.
Through contradiction.
During the visitation proceeding, her attorney submitted banquet-planning messages intended to show Cordelia had been focused on hosting duties, not corporate politics.
One message did the opposite.
Three days before the banquet, Cordelia wrote Malcolm:
He’ll never step aside for business. It has to be the boy.
Malcolm answered:
Only if you can make him lose control in front of the right people.
Cordelia replied:
Leave that to me.
The meaning of the entire night changed.
Theo had not simply misbehaved.
Cordelia had not merely lost her temper.
And Malcolm’s threat had not been spontaneous.
They chose the banquet because senior directors would be present.
Malcolm arranged the seating.
Cordelia created the trigger.
They expected Gabriele to see Theo suffering.
They expected him to attack.
They expected witnesses.
The emergency leadership resolution was already waiting.
Three earlier clues finally aligned.
The unusual number of voting directors at a family banquet.
The seating changes facing the terrace.
Malcolm’s strangely specific promise to hurt Theo again while standing in front of everyone.
The cruelty was real.
The trap was real too.
Cordelia had used a three-year-old child as bait against his own father.
Gabriele sat across from Claire after reading the messages.
“She knew I’d hit him.”
“Yes.”
“And I did.”
“Yes.”
Claire did not soften it.
“That’s why it almost worked.”
Gabriele looked away.
For most of his adult life, people feared his temper.
He had treated that fear as power.
Cordelia and Malcolm treated it as predictability.
Theo had paid the price for both.
“What happens now?”
Claire closed the file.
“The messages strengthen the case against their version of events. They also make the company governance issue much more serious.”
“And me?”
“You still hit Malcolm.”
“He hit me first.”
“That matters.”
“And Cordelia?”
Claire paused.
“You struck her after she reached toward Theo.”
Gabriele nodded.
He understood.
Context did not erase actions.
Then Claire placed two paths in front of him.
He could use the evidence to negotiate privately.
Malcolm resigns.
Cordelia drops her visitation request.
The family minimizes public damage.
Or Gabriele could turn the entire record over to the company review, child-safety investigators, lenders, and any appropriate authorities.
The second option would expose Malcolm’s financial system.
Cordelia’s role.
And Gabriele’s own behavior.
He thought about Theo asking:
Are you gonna hit Uncle Malcolm again?
May you like
Gabriele looked at Claire.
“No private deal.”
