Chapter 8

Gabriele made the irreversible decision on Monday morning.
He requested a formal independent review of Venturi Holdings.
Not an internal family review.
Outside auditors.
Outside governance counsel.
Outside child-safety cooperation.
He also voluntarily stepped back from approving transactions connected to Malcolm’s divisions until the review was complete.
Melissa stared at him.
“You know what people will say.”
“That Malcolm forced me out.”
“Yes.”
“Let them.”
“This could affect financing.”
“I know.”
“You may not get control back quickly.”
Gabriele looked at her.
“That’s the point.”
Melissa did not understand.
“If the company only works because I personally control every answer, then Cordelia was right about one thing. We built it wrong.”
The audit widened.
Malcolm’s vendor-loan system was documented.
Several directors admitted they had been pressured to support his emergency resolution after the banquet.
No one had signed yet.
Why?
Because Gabriele had returned to the table after rescuing Theo and immediately separated everyone instead of continuing the confrontation.
Malcolm expected chaos.
Instead Gabriele shut the event down.
Ironically, the violence that did occur gave Malcolm something to use.
His attorneys circulated statements describing Gabriele as dangerous.
Then Cordelia made her most serious move.
She petitioned through counsel for temporary supervised visitation with Theo.
Not custody.
Not control.
Just access.
Her filing described herself as a lifelong caregiver suddenly cut off because of “a single disputed disciplinary incident.”
Gabriele was furious.
Claire was not.
“This is useful.”
“How?”
“She put her version in writing.”
The filing claimed Theo had been outside “approximately ninety seconds.”
Security timing showed more than six minutes.
It claimed Cordelia believed Gabriele approved the punishment.
Yet several witnesses remembered her telling guests not that Gabriele approved, but that “Gabriele needs to learn what discipline looks like.”
Those differences mattered.
Gabriele submitted the medical documentation and witness accounts through counsel.
He did not call Cordelia.
He did not threaten Malcolm.
That restraint cost him more than anyone around him understood.
Then Malcolm reacted.
He contacted Melissa privately and offered to “stabilize” the company if Gabriele ended the audit.
Melissa forwarded the message directly to outside counsel.
One line stood out:
This can still disappear as a family issue.
Gabriele read it.
Malcolm was no longer denying a problem.
May you like
He was negotiating over whether the truth became public.
That was the point of no return.
