Chapter 9

The independent review reached beyond family drama.
Banks requested information about Malcolm’s vendor relationships.
Two lenders paused transactions.
A Boston newspaper learned the conservatory banquet had triggered a child-welfare investigation involving a prominent local business family.
Gabriele’s name appeared in the article.
So did Malcolm’s.
Theo’s did not.
Gabriele was grateful for that.
The article also mentioned Gabriele striking relatives at the event.
The public did not know the full context.
Some employees did not either.
Company morale deteriorated.
A senior manager resigned.
One project lost financing.
Melissa told Gabriele that the restructuring he wanted might now happen faster than planned because lenders were demanding outside oversight.
“It’s not how I wanted it.”
“No.”
“Maybe it’s still necessary.”
She nodded.
The financial investigation also uncovered Malcolm’s personal exposure.
His private lender partnership had borrowed aggressively to fund the vendor loans.
If Gabriele’s restructuring cut off those vendors, Malcolm would face millions in losses.
He was not merely protecting influence.
He was protecting himself from collapse.
Then Claire received something from the governance attorney Malcolm had contacted before the banquet.
The attorney had become uncomfortable after seeing news coverage and voluntarily preserved correspondence.
There was no secret confession.
There was preparation.
Malcolm had asked hypothetical questions:
What if Gabriele attacked a family member in front of directors?
What if the trigger involved his child?
Would temporary removal be justified?
Could Malcolm act as interim operating chairman?
All asked before Theo was locked outside.
Gabriele stared at the timeline.
Claire said quietly, “This is getting close.”
“Close to what?”
“You know.”
He did.
The abuse of Theo may have served two purposes.
Punish a child Cordelia resented.
And bait a father Malcolm wanted removed.
But one question remained.
May you like
Was Cordelia part of that plan?
Or had Malcolm simply known exactly how to use his mother’s cruelty?
