Chapter 6

Theo stopped asking to return to the estate.

That should have relieved Gabriele.

Instead it told him how unsafe the child had felt there.

At bedtime, Theo wanted the bedroom door open.

He asked twice whether Cordelia knew where they were sleeping.

He cried when a delivery driver knocked unexpectedly.

Gabriele arranged for a child therapist.

Cordelia heard about it through relatives.

Her response reached Gabriele within hours.

“He needs his family, not some stranger studying him.”

Gabriele blocked her number.

It was the first time in his life he had done that.

Then his cousin Dominic Venturi called.

“You’re freezing out your aunt over one mistake.”

Gabriele almost hung up.

Instead he asked, “What did she tell you happened?”

“That Theo threw a fit. She put him on the terrace for a minute. You came in, saw red, and attacked Malcolm.”

Gabriele smiled without humor.

“She didn’t mention Malcolm told me he’d do it again?”

Silence.

“She didn’t mention telling everyone I ordered it?”

Longer silence.

Dominic finally said, “No.”

Gabriele realized Cordelia was already rewriting the event.

He stopped trying to manage the family privately.

Through Claire, he gave investigators and child-welfare officials the guest list, medical assessment, security records, and statements from staff willing to speak.

That choice created backlash.

Some relatives refused interviews.

Others accused him of bringing outsiders into family matters.

One person surprised him.

Evan Russo.

The security chief requested a private meeting.

“I need to tell you something that makes me look bad.”

Gabriele waited.

“Cordelia has been ordering guards around for years.”

“I know.”

“No.”

Evan shook his head.

“You know she gives instructions. You don’t know what happens when people refuse.”

Cordelia controlled holiday bonuses for estate staff through a family fund.

She influenced schedules.

Housing allowances.

Introductions that led to better jobs.

“She never threatened anybody directly,” Evan said.

“She didn’t have to.”

That explained the banquet.

Adults had watched Theo outside because helping him meant contradicting Cordelia publicly.

They had made the same calculation employees had made for years.

Safety versus consequences.

Gabriele looked at Evan.

“Why tell me now?”

“Because I watched that kid hit the glass.”

Evan looked ashamed.

“And I waited for you.”

That sentence mattered.

Even a man responsible for security had waited for Gabriele instead of protecting Theo himself.

The problem was larger than Cordelia.

Everyone had learned that authority mattered more than judgment.

Gabriele had built part of that culture too.

Before he could decide how to change it, Melissa called.

The outside auditors had found a document on Malcolm’s company server.

An unsigned emergency leadership resolution.

If approved, it would temporarily remove Gabriele from operational control for conduct deemed dangerous to the family organization.

The draft date was three days before the banquet.
