Chapter 12

The final family confrontation took place in a conference room overlooking Boston Harbor.

Cordelia came with counsel.

Malcolm came separately.

Gabriele sat with Claire.

No capos.

No bodyguards inside.

No banquet audience.

Claire placed the messages on the table.

Cordelia did not look at them.

Malcolm did.

“You planned to remove me,” Gabriele said.

Malcolm leaned back.

“You were already leaving.”

“I was hiring professionals.”

“You were destroying the family structure.”

“I was making people accountable.”

“Same thing, apparently.”

Gabriele almost smiled.

Then he looked at Cordelia.

“You put Theo outside because you knew I would react.”

Cordelia finally met his eyes.

“I put him outside because he needed discipline.”

“Both can be true.”

She said nothing.

Gabriele continued.

“What did Theo do?”

Cordelia’s mouth tightened.

“He knocked over a glass.”

Gabriele stared at her.

That was all.

A three-year-old knocked over a glass.

Six minutes in freezing weather.

Used as punishment.

Used as bait.

Cordelia saw his face.

“Don’t pretend Laura would have raised him better.”

Gabriele became still.

There it was again.

Laura.

“What did she do to you?”

“She changed you.”

“No.”

“She made you embarrassed of us.”

“She made me question us.”

“Exactly.”

Cordelia leaned forward.

“Your father built a family where nobody could threaten us.”

“And you turned that into a family where nobody could question you.”

For the first time, Cordelia looked wounded rather than angry.

Malcolm interrupted.

“This isn’t about Mom.”

Gabriele turned.

“Then what are you protecting?”

Malcolm laughed bitterly.

“My life.”

The vendor loans.

His reputation.

His position.

The image of himself as the man who could solve anything inside the Venturi organization.

“If you brought in outside executives,” Malcolm said, “they would’ve audited everything.”

“And found your loans.”

“Yes.”

“So you needed me unstable.”

“I needed you gone.”

The honesty surprised even Malcolm.

Cordelia looked at her son.

“You said temporary.”

Malcolm stared at her.

“You knew what we were doing.”

“I said teach him a lesson.”

“No. You said make him lose control.”

Their alliance finally split completely.

Gabriele watched them accuse each other.

Months earlier, he would have enjoyed it.

Now he felt only tired.

He stood.

Cordelia looked up.

“Where are you going?”

“Home.”

“We’re not finished.”

“Yes.”

Gabriele looked at her.

May you like

“We are.”

For the first time, the boundary did not require a threat.
