Chapter 7

Claire read the draft twice.

“It could be contingency planning.”

Gabriele looked at her.

“You don’t believe that.”

“I believe we need more.”

The resolution required support from senior family-company directors and several trust representatives.

Gabriele checked the banquet guest list.

Nine people with voting influence had attended.

Normally, only three came to winter family dinners.

“Who invited the others?”

Evan pulled event records.

Malcolm.

The excuse had been year-end donor networking.

Gabriele thought about the banquet again.

Cordelia putting Theo outside where everyone could see.

Malcolm standing between Gabriele and Cordelia.

Malcolm’s words:

When you’re not here, I’ll throw him out again.

Then the shove.

Then the punch Malcolm threw first.

“Why say that in front of witnesses?” Gabriele asked.

Claire looked up.

“Unless he wanted a reaction.”

Another piece appeared through the conservatory staff.

The banquet manager remembered Malcolm changing table assignments that afternoon.

He moved three senior company directors into seats with direct views of the terrace doors.

At the time, she assumed they wanted the snow view.

Claire wrote it down.

Still not proof.

But the pattern was changing.

The opening cruelty had seemed impulsive.

It was beginning to look staged.

Not fake.

Theo had truly been endangered.

That made it worse.

Gabriele asked Evan for every communication related to the dinner.

Most were ordinary.

Menu.

Security.

Seating.

Arrival times.

Then one email stood out.

Malcolm to a corporate governance attorney five days earlier:

If leadership behavior becomes publicly unstable at the family banquet, can an emergency board review be called before Monday?

The attorney answered:

Depends on the conduct and available witnesses. Document everything.

Malcolm had prepared for unstable behavior before Gabriele behaved unstably.

Claire looked at him.

“Now we have a question worth asking.”

Gabriele’s anger felt different.

Colder.

Cordelia and Malcolm had financial reasons to stop his restructuring.

They also knew his weakest point.

Theo.

Gabriele had always reacted violently when someone threatened people he loved.

Malcolm knew that better than anyone.

The pieces were pointing toward something ugly.

But Claire stopped him from deciding too soon.

“We prove motive. We prove preparation. Then we decide what it means.”

Gabriele nodded.

That evening Theo climbed into his lap with a picture book.

Halfway through, he touched Gabriele’s hand.

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“Are you mad?”

“Not at you.”

“Are you gonna hit Uncle Malcolm again?”

Gabriele went quiet.

Theo had seen more than he realized.

“No.”

“Promise?”

Gabriele looked at his son.

“Yes.”

That promise immediately changed what he was willing to do next.

May you like

He would expose Malcolm and Cordelia.

But he would not give them another violent reaction to use.
