Chapter 18 - SOPHIE GOES TO SCHOOL

Sophie’s first real crisis after the family drama involved glue.

Kindergarten.

She glued part of a paper crown to her own hair.

Nora called me laughing.

I left a board dinner to help.

Not because the situation required a Mafia boss.

Because Sophie asked for Daddy.

We used conditioner.

Scissors for one tiny strand.

Problem solved.

Then Sophie cried because she thought school picture day was ruined.

Nora said:

“Hair grows.”

I said:

“You look fine.”

Sophie said:

“You both say stuff.”

Correct.

Then I realized how precious stupid problems were.

No hidden money.

No dead-father lie.

Glue.

Later a teacher asked for family-history forms.

Sophie wrote:

Mommy Nora.

Daddy Roman.

Grandma Helena.

Grandma Bennett.

No explanation.

Children deserve identities before footnotes.

Then another student told Sophie rich people never have problems.

She came home offended.

“Are we rich?”

“Yes.”

“Do we have problems?”

“Yes.”

“Then he wrong.”

Excellent.

No need to mention $1.8 million.
