Chapter 20 - SOPHIE LEARNS ABOUT THE MONEY
Sophie was fourteen when she asked for the financial story.
Not because we volunteered.
Because she found old news coverage of Helena’s case online.
“Why does it say fraud?”
The child version was no longer enough.
We told her.
Fifty thousand monthly.
Support agreement.
Reserve 14-B.
Belladonna collateral.
Helena’s lies.
My failure to verify.
Nora’s decision not to litigate.
The bank review.
The plea.
The repayment.
No mythology.
Sophie listened for an hour.
Then:
“So there was almost two million dollars?”
“Yes.”
“And Mom lived in that apartment?”
Nora answered:
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I didn’t know.”
Sophie looked at me.
“Did you think we were rich?”
“I thought you had the support I promised.”
“You didn’t check.”
“No.”
She stared.
Teenage judgment is pure.
“Why fifty thousand?”
Nora laughed.
“Your father was dramatic.”
I objected.
“It included housing and security.”
“Dramatic.”
Sophie smiled.
Then became serious.
“Did Grandma keep the money because she hated me?”
“No.”
“How know?”
I answered:
“Because the evidence showed she wanted the money available for Belladonna and wanted control over the family situation. She did terrible things. That does not mean every terrible motive is true.”
Good.
Precision protects even people who hurt you.
Then:
“Did she love me?”
“Yes.”
“Can someone love you and lie you out of their life?”
Nora answered before me.
“Yes.”
That was the harder lesson.
Then Sophie said:
“I don’t want fifty thousand a month when I’m older.”
“You won’t get it.”
She looked offended.
