Chapter 24 - SOPHIE BECOMES A VETERINARIAN

Sophie became a veterinarian.
Small-animal medicine.
No Morello Foundation.
No family office.
No Belladonna job.
She liked dogs more than donors.
At thirty, she bought into a veterinary practice using savings, a bank loan, and a normal distribution from the investment account that had been funded for her since childhood.
I offered to pay cash.
She said no.
I offered a loan.
She said maybe.
Her bank offered better structure.
I was offended.
Nora laughed.
Then Sophie married a teacher named Mark Ellison.
Good man.
Terrible at formal dinners.
At their wedding, I wore the signet ring because Sophie asked.
Not as authority.
Family jewelry.
Then Sophie whispered before walking down the aisle:
“You’re not transferring ownership of me.”
“I know.”
“Just checking.”
Our family had learned.
Then she had a daughter.
Mia.
Helena never met her.
That was sad.

Not tragic.
Every relationship has a last page whether anyone finishes the lesson.
