Chapter 21 - HELENA’S LAST ROLE
At seventy-nine, Helena became Belladonna House’s historical adviser.
No finance.
No operations.
No hiring.
She gave interviews to preservation researchers and helped identify photographs in the archive.
She was excellent.
Of course.
The same memory that made her dangerous when attached to authority made her invaluable when attached to history.
A researcher asked her about my father.
Helena talked for two hours.
Then stopped herself.
“I am making him sound better than he was.”
Progress.
She added the bad years.
The federal investigation.
The lies he told.
The work he later did to separate the legal businesses from criminal associates.
No saint-making.
Then she spoke about her own case.
On record.
With counsel.
Not every detail.
Enough.
“I confused family property with my right to decide how family money should be used.”
Then:
“I believed keeping Belladonna under my control justified borrowing authority I did not have.”
That phrasing irritated me.
Borrowing.
Thomas laughed when I complained.
“She is eighty. Take the progress.”
Fine.
Then Sophie, sixteen, visited the archive with school.
Helena asked:
“Would you like to see the original Belladonna plans?”
“Yes.”
No financial sermon.
No apology repetition.
