Chapter 13 - THE PHOTOGRAPH THAT WAS NEVER TAKEN

The birthday photographer had captured dozens of images.
Cake.
Children.
Decorations.
The porch before the incident.
No formal threshold portrait.
The confrontation interrupted it.
My mother-in-law asked later whether the photographer had any usable image of “the descendants.”
He declined to provide materials directly while the legal dispute continued.
Professional.
Eventually we received the family photographs we had paid for.
My daughter chose one.
She was sitting on my husband’s shoulders with cake on her cheek.
That became the framed birthday photograph.
Not the chain.
Not the porch.

Not a corrected lineup of blood descendants.
Joy.
