Chapter 15 - GRANDMOTHER’S FIRST APOLOGY

“I’m sorry the party became upsetting.”
Rejected.
Second:
“I’m sorry your mother misunderstood what I was trying to do.”
Worse.
Then therapy.
Months.
Eventually:
“I put a chain around your ankle because I wanted other adults to see you outside the family party. I knew that would hurt you. I was wrong.”
Specific.
Then:
“I also told people a DNA test meant your daddy was not your biological father even though I knew the sample I used was not his.”
There.
Then:
“You never needed to prove you belonged.”
Good.
Our daughter listened.
Then asked:
“Why did you hate me?”
Her grandmother began crying.
“I didn’t hate you.”
“Then why?”
The hardest answer.
