Chapter 24 - GRANDMOTHER’S LAST BIRTHDAY GIFT

My mother-in-law died at eighty-two.

Before that, she gave our daughter one final birthday present.

A key.

I almost laughed when I saw it.

Not the porch key.

A key to a small cedar chest.

Inside:

Family photographs.

Letters.

Recipes.

Old jewelry.

No lineage chart.

No notes labeling legitimate descendants.

Then a letter.

I spent too much of my life believing family history required a gatekeeper. Keep whatever matters. Throw away whatever doesn’t.

Our daughter kept the recipes.

Some photographs.

One bracelet.

Discarded several ceremonial seating charts.

Good judgment.
