Chapter 23 - THE FATHER SHE NEVER HAD TO PROVE

At sixteen, our daughter found the official DNA report in a sealed legal archive box.
She did not open it.
Instead she brought it to her father.
“Do you want this?”
He looked.
Then:
“No.”
“Can we shred?”
We checked record-retention requirements first.
Some copies needed to remain with counsel.
Our personal duplicate did not.
She shredded it.
A document that once felt capable of saving the family became strips of paper.
My husband watched.
“Feel weird?”
I asked.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
May you like
“Because for one day I thought this paper could give her something she already had.”
Exactly.
