Chapter 23 - Judith asks to stay
Harold was ready to negotiate.
Judith was not.
She filed a declaration:
Greyhaven was her home for thirty-seven years.
She had cared for Margaret there.
Raised Daniel there.
Buried her husband? Harold alive. No.
Hosted every Christmas.
Losing it felt like losing Daniel again.
I understood.
Then she asked to remain even if Harold surrendered his occupancy.
Problem:
Her right derived through Harold.
No independent life estate.
If he surrendered, hers ended.
Could trustee give her a new lease?
Potentially.
Would that be good for Lily?
That was the question.
Dr. Dean recommended against co-residence at that time.
Lily remained afraid of Judith’s dismissal:
“She deserved it.”
Judith had not repaired that.
Then a supervised meeting occurred at therapist’s office because Lily asked one question:
“Why didn’t Grandma help me?”
Judith answered poorly at first.
“I was shocked.”
Lily:
“You helped Carla.”
Judith cried.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I thought your mom had hurt her.”
“She hit me first.”
“I know.”
Then Judith said:
“I chose the adult I was used to protecting instead of looking at you.”
That was the first honest sentence.
Lily did not hug her.
Did not forgive her.
Just said:
“Okay.”
