Chapter 5 - Lily’s interview
Lily’s forensic interview happened four days after the barbecue.
Interviewer:
Samantha Rhodes.
I did not sit beside Lily.
No coaching.
No practicing.
I told her only:
“Tell the truth. If you don’t remember, say you don’t remember.”
She described the skewer clearly.
Carla was angry because Lily had not left the swing fast enough.
Carla picked up the metal stick.
Lily backed away.
Carla hit her leg.
Did Carla mean to stab her?
Lily said:
“I don’t know.”
Good.
No adult interpretation forced onto a six-year-old.
Then prior treatment.
Had Carla hit Lily before?
“No.”
Spanked?
“No.”
Grabbed her?
“One time.”
What happened?
Carla pulled Lily by the wrist when she ran through the house with muddy shoes.
No injury.
Then Judith.
Did Grandma hurt her?
“No.”
Did Grandpa?
“No.”
Then why was Lily afraid?
“Because they say Mom can’t stay if she makes trouble.”
There.
Who said that?
“Grandma.”
What trouble?
“Asking about money.”
A six-year-old should not know that sentence.
Then Carla.
“She says this is not Mom’s house.”
“What does she say about you?”
Lily thought.
“She says I get it when grown-ups die.”
That was strange.
“Do you know what ‘it’ is?”
“The house.”
Then:
“Does Carla say she wants the house?”
“She says she wants to fix it.”
Children hear fragments.
No legal weight by itself.
Then something more concrete.
“She told Grandpa if Mom leaves, they can sell faster.”
I read that transcript later with my hands shaking.
Why would my sister be discussing a property sale in front of my child?
Then Lily said:
“Grandpa said nobody can sell until the man signs.”
“What man?”
“Mr. Rowan.”
Caleb.
So Harold knew Caleb had approval authority.
Then:
“Did Grandma say Lily deserved being hit?”
“Yes.”
“How did that make you feel?”
“Like she doesn’t like me.”
That hurt more than the property.
Then child welfare evaluated future contact.
Carla:
No contact pending court.
Judith and Harold:
Supervised contact only initially because they had witnessed the assault, failed to intervene, and immediately blamed Lily.
Not because they personally hit her.
Specific.
They were furious.
Harold said:
“I raised two children.”
Child welfare answered:
May you like
“This assessment concerns the child in front of us now.”
No grandfather immunity.
