Chapter 26 - The swing

Nine months after the barbecue, Lily was still six.

Her leg had healed.

The scar near her knee was small.

She ran normally.

No orthopedic limitation.

The swing set remained.

For months she avoided the exact spot where Carla stood with the skewer.

Then one Saturday, she climbed onto the swing.

I sat on the patio.

No barbecue.

No family party.

Just Lily.

Maria, our new property manager from an independent firm, reviewing irrigation with a contractor.

Caleb Rowan arrived carrying a folder.

He no longer felt mysterious.

Mostly he brought paperwork.

“Final releases.”

Carla’s company claim:

Closed.

North Elm:

No claim.

Harold occupancy surrender:

Recorded.

Judith derivative right:

Ended.

Meridian accounting:

Current.

Related-party sale review:

Closed.

No pending property litigation.

I signed an acknowledgment as Lily’s parent.

Not as owner.

Then Caleb looked toward Lily.

“How’s she doing?”

“Better.”

He nodded.

Then:

“You know the trust will review whether keeping Greyhaven continues to make sense every year.”

“I know.”

“You’re not attached to winning the house?”

I looked at the swing.

“I’m attached to her feeling safe wherever she lives.”

Good answer.

Finally true.

Then a car stopped at the curb.

Carla.

Not allowed on property.

She remained on probation and no-contact order regarding Lily.

She did not enter.

Her lawyer had scheduled supervised retrieval of one final storage box from a detached management shed.

Professional monitor present.

Lily saw the car.

Stopped swinging.

I stood.

“Want to go inside?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

Carla never came into view.

Monitor collected the box.

Car drove away.

Lily started swinging again.

No confrontation.

No final speech.

No one needed one.
