At twelve, Clara asked why old relatives had called me Boss.
I gave the historical answer.
Then the simplified one.
“Because our family used to confuse business leadership, family seniority, and power.”
“Were you Mafia?”
I sighed.
“Some relatives were involved in organized crime generations ago. Our current businesses are legitimate.”
“So why dress like that?”
She pointed at my black three-piece suit.
I looked down.
“Fair question.”
