The centennial commemorative book had gone to print?
Not yet.
Final pages remained open until portrait day.
The printer deadline was midnight.
That explained urgency.
One full-page spread titled:
THE HOUSE AT ONE HUNDRED.
Arthur’s portrait would fill the page.
Below it, caption.
Miranda had access as events committee liaison.
She inserted her own draft:
Damian Valestro, current Head of House, with Violet Valestro, recognized next-generation representative, surrounded by the continuing branches of the Valestro family.
No Clara.
No approval.
The editor flagged the language.
Sent it back.
Miranda replied:
Approved by House tradition.
False.
The editor asked for written confirmation.
Miranda planned to provide it after the portrait.
What written confirmation?
The Patron Register entry.
Who was supposed to sign that?
Silvio? No, different story. Here an elderly archivist? Let's say Leon Valestro, 78, former Family Circle secretary. Introduce.
Leonard Valestro, seventy-eight, had served as secretary of the old Family Circle for thirty years.
He was not corrupt.
He was sentimental.
Miranda had persuaded him that the final portrait needed to record “continuity.”
She sent him a prepared register entry.
He had not signed.
Why?
Because he wanted to see the photograph first.
There.
The chain connected.
Portrait.
Chair.
Caption.
Register.
Transitional memo.
The visual fact would trigger the paper trail Miranda intended to call tradition.
Then Julian found an email from Leonard.
Miranda, I will record what the photograph actually shows. I will not create a role Damian has not recognized.
Good.
Miranda replied:
If Violet is seated beside him and he permits the portrait, recognition is obvious.
There.
Consent by silence.
Except she planned to remove the one person whose presence would change the meaning.
Then:
Leonard:
Does Damian know?
Miranda:
He knows the old customs.
Not an answer.
Then the final message, six hours before the portrait:
Leonard:
I will not sign anything if Clara is excluded over objection.
Miranda did not reply.
She instead went to the dressing room with a chain.
