Chapter 24 - MIRANDA’S FINAL APOLOGY TO CLARA

Miranda apologized properly when Clara was twenty-six.

No mediator.

No lawyer.

She asked permission first.

Clara agreed to coffee.

Miranda said:

“I chained you because I wanted your chair.”

Clara answered:

“You wanted the picture.”

“Yes.”

“And what the picture would make people think.”

“Yes.”

Then:

“I treated your absence like material I could arrange.”

That was the best description anyone had found.

Clara nodded.

“You did.”

“I’m sorry.”

Clara did not say:

I forgive you.

She said:

May you like

“I believe you understand now.”

Sometimes that is more meaningful.
